TracQuest / Electromotive Tec3 fun
Hi folks – I just got back from the TracQuest event at Watkins Glen – lots of track time and good people.
I was at the Glen for the last five days (instructing at the BWM club and the TracQuest events) testing out the new Tec3 installation – it didn’t miss a beat. The set up dynoed at 370 wheel HP at 18 psi a couple of weeks ago. I turned it down to 16 psi for track use (350 wheel HP). After about 700 miles and 120 gallons of gas it ran with out a flaw (other than popping off an intercooler hose once).
Nothing better than the look on the Viper GTS owners face as I passed him. After chatting with him in the garage we swapped lap times….I had about 7 seconds a lap on him! You can credit either the car mods or driving skill – either way my ego won’t complain!
All sorts of driving conditions (as long as you like cold!) Snow, rain and a little hail. Windshield wipers are pretty much worthless in the 100 to 150 range.

PS – There is another event in the fall – plan on coming out, its lots of fun.

Stand alone will be my next mod after I get my LSD so I can handle the Kokeln power next. My question is how do all the accessories and gauges do after the stand alone install? What crossovers are needed and do you loose any gauges beside the factroy boost gauge? What is the total cost of one of these from purchase to start the car and which ones "teach themselves or self program". TIA

Good to hear that all went well at the Glen. I made a run at Putnam Park in Indiana with my car last weekend. The only glitch I had was a bad spark plug. A new set of Bosch plugs and one was dead. Never had that happen.
The Tec3 on the other hand was a lot of fun to play with. No problems.
Thanks again to Chris White for his help. <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

How much was your tec3?
and did you look at any other systems?
I was all for going past the standard MAF upgrade, to somthing alittle better, but im starting to wonder if its THAT much better? I mean is it as good as the new turbo im putting on?
How much more power will i be able to get over going with an MAF?
im doing all the "standard" mods, bigger turbo, open exhuast, custom intake manifold, bored TB, cold/ram/cone-air intake, upped boost, yada yada.
So what the tec3 or the like going to do for me, since this isnt my race car?
Im mean all i want is 450hp(crank).
thanks
Mike

UNLIMITED !!! There are limitations to MAF upgrades because they rely upon the stock computer, which can only be pushed so far. About 350hp is the maximum that people have been able to squeeze out of MAF kits. ALL of the cars posting more than 400hp have used an aftermarket EFI system...

Let’s see what I can cover here –
All the stock gauges work except the boost gauge and that will work if you feel like leave in the KLR in the loop. Since the stock boost gauge is not great to begin with I just let it go. As part of the kit I include a wiring harness that keeps the stock gauges running as well as provide power and various other inputs (such as A/C operation) to the TEC3.
The self learning programs of ALL the systems are a great idea but unfortunately they fall short of being really useful. The systems (yes all systems) need to be tuned on a dyno. If the base program is pretty close this can be done in a hour or two. The reason that the self learning feature is not really up to the task is that the correction info is gathered from the O2 sensor (not very accurate) and is not done in a steady state environment. To get a good idea on what eh fuel needs are the engine needs to be in a steady state (steady rpm and load) with the acel/ decel enrichments turned off and the temp (coolant) at a steady state.
Cost? Hmmm….tricky question. I’ll give you the standard sales pitch that everybody else does (!) - $1850 for the Tec3 ECU.
OK, that is not the whole ball of wax, you need the coil pack, wiring harness and sensors by Electromotive and a bunch of special brackets, modified stock parts and custom wiring harnesses to make it all work. The total cost for a complete “bolt on” system for a 944 turbo is about $3500 with some other options available for small additional costs.
If any one just wants the Electromotive TEC3 parts I would be happy to get them a good price and give them a little help in getting the project done. The parts that I have had fabricated are done a batch at a time and the first ones were real expensive (I ate that cost for my own installation). The only other thing that is needed to finish off the installation is the injectors of your choice. The sizing is dependent on the turbo size and boost range.
As Danno said – the power available is unlimited except by funds and life span on the rest of the car! The fuel delivery of the stock system will limit you to about 350hp to the rear wheels if you use very trick in the book and that puts it right at the limit where just a small change will make you run lean….boom! 450 at the crank with the stock DME & injectors? Not gonna happen.
Hey? Home come I don’t have Rennlist member under my name? I’ve been a member for years…..gonna have to fix that…

If you wince at the $3500 that Chris quotes remember that you are done with chips/mafs etc. What do you do if you move from Tampa Florida to Denver Colorado? With a Tec3 you can tune to match the altitude and temp. What happens if you are at the track and there is no race gase for your 100 octane chips. You can easily have multiple maps for the Tec3. I burnt a CD with the Tec3 manual/program and a few tuning files which I keep in the tool chest. It takes less than a minute to upload a new program.
The main item I found to be important is support. To that Point I really can't thank Chris White enough. I was having some issues with my Tec3 and he provided some very helpful advice and a good starting point .bin and .S19 file. He did this even though I did NOT purchase the Tec from him. After asking 3 times from my supplier I quit. In the future I will purchase from Chris.

No wince,,just trying to figure out if I can hide my quarterly bonus from my "boost control" & that my friends would be called a Wife. LOL!!!
Then I'll have to upgrade the suspension to handle the extra power...I'm up for that!
Alan, sorry that I'm not familiar with Chris's business or website, got that info too? TIA
