Great pics, thanks for sharing!! I don't want to know how many hours that are put into that restoration...

A drive shaft driven alternator by is generally pretty common for all out race cars. Not so good for stop and go traffic

Been done lots. And One I was thinking about. Mounting the oil pump and scavenge pumps off the bell housing. Nascar type stuff.

Hmm what oil pump and scavenge pump are you talking about?
The engine oil pump is in the "usual" location by the alternator/ac compressor?

I was not too terribly specific. My fault. I was on the train of thought of strangely placed parts in a race car. So, I wasn't specifically talking about this GT car like everyone else. Here is a pic of what I am talking about though.

Wow, never seen an alternator in that location! I assume it's running off battery until moving? Is that to free up parasitic drag on the engine?

Some background...

We finished the restoration on this car about 10 years ago....it has been sitting "inside its bubble" since then.

Al Holbert was the only one to ever drive this car, according to Dave Klym. We are waiting for documentation about this fact.

When the car came to us, it didn't have any sign of ever having any fluids in it, so we had always assummed that it had never been tested.

Sorry about the polished aluminum....but it is just about the only way to maintain sheet aluminum, over a long period of time. Imagine how this car would look, if all that aluminum was oxidized.

The reception of this car was HUGE at the Rennsport Reunion. It was the only non horizontally opposed car present, in the display area. Alvin Springer told me that it was the "best" car at the entire event! I was able to get pictures with Dave Klym sitting inside and another with Dave and Alvin together, by the car.

Keep in mind, there were Porsche Factory people that had never seen one of these cars, in person!

The seven 944 GTRs are the only Porsches (race cars or street cars) that were not designed, built, and tested in Germany....they are a very, very unique piece of Porsche history.

Thank you for bringing us the background of the car. Amazing work, how many man hours do you think went into the restoration? The attention to detail looks impeccable.

Hard to know....it's very unique.....a "time capsule" back to 1987. This fuel cell has never had fuel in it. The brake system has never had fluid in it. There's wasn't a trace of oil in the dry sump tank. There are examples out there that have been well used, for what I consider to be really low amounts of money.....for the importance of these race cars. Seems like none of those cars still have all of the original details, but have been modified to suit other owners/conditions. However, when you stop and think about how many "non horizontally opposed" race cars Porsche ever made...any one of these cars is an absolute steal, at their current prices. There simply are a very few examples of "other than 911 based" race cars out there. These cars will go absolutely "nuts" in the next 20 years, as collectors figure out the void.

I'm not even sure the Porsche Museum has an example of any of the true "water cooled" race cars....that's a huge void, in a huge collection of their own cars! At the Rennsport Reunion, there were 14 962s that had Klym tubs....and at least that many that had Porsche tubs.

One "non 911" based vehicle. Seriously?

When we got the car, it was not complete. It had all of the suspension, gearbox, original bodywork, interior, etc. Dave Klym had sent us what is apparently engine 001, as part of the original buy. This engine has a Kugelfisher injection system. We had to duplicate many little pieces, like water lines, fuel system, etc. We assembled the entire car, with huge attention to detail, and them tore it apart down to the very last rivet, in order to properly paint it and detail it, further.

Give you an idea of how rare some of the pieces are....I had a 962 owner come up and offer me more for the front brakes and hubs than any of the other GTRs have sold for....seems that those twin 962 calipers aren't everywhere to be found...and even less that have never touched a rotor.
