Default My 16v conversion thread

Since I need to keep myself on task I'm starting a thread documenting my 16v installation. After doing a slight bit of pre fitment last night I realized it was going to be a bit of fab work. I started to contemplate just doing a bit of port work to one of my current 8v heads but I really want to make some power so 16v it is.

Since it is getting close to winter I should have some time to get it done proper.

As of right now my plans are;

Use the factory S headers. I think I'm going to do V-bands to mate them to the crossover. Does anyone have any reasons this may not be the best option?

At the same time I'm going to redo the crossover like my old car using a v-band just before the bend upward toward the turbo.. This will give me the option to make new pieces to fit different turbine inlets.

The intake is going to be a bit of work it looks like if I want to keep the AOS. As of now my plan is to either use the custom intake I got from Bruce or use a factory 951 plenum. Either way I'm using the S intake flange.

As far as pistons go, I am not quite sure which direction I'm going yet. If Chis White still has the parts he had mentioned before i may go that route or flycut the stock turbo pistons or possibly even use my high compression shortblock out of the other car. (lots of work no matter which way I go)

So if anyone has suggestions I'm completely open to them.

Here is a pre fitment photo on the current shortblock.

i cannot wait to see how much power that makes! I've always wanted a 16v 2.5 turbo myself.

Nothing wrong with V-band, id make sure you get thick ones so they don't warp when welding them, get the ones with groves in them so they slip and lock together. I got dad to machine lips and groves into mine and it made installing time alot quicker, less lining up.

Yep 2.5 for now. When I come across a good deal on a 968 engine that will be the final step.

I did some fitting tonight and I think I may just use the flanges from the 951 headers that mate to the crossover. I cut the flanges off the s headers and mounted them up to the head and it looks like it will be VERY straightforward and easy to mate them together. Tomorrow I will cut the flanges off the 951 headers and clean them up in a plane sander along with porting them out a little. One of the tubes could be welded right now to the flange. The other, I will add a short piece of stainless so it will be a clean install.

The s headers are also 1/8" larger diameter which should help exhaust flow. I will look for an expansion joint to fit similar to the stock header. Then I will get them coated. I'm thinking I can have the headers built by the end of the week.

I'm also taking the intake in to work and having a co worker send it to the guys he uses to cut his intakes. They do a very nice job. His company is APIKOL and they do performance Audi work.

The S head bolts on? Don't you have to change the water jackets or something?

Nope the s head bolts right up. Other than the fab work and pistons, I think only a longer timing belt is needed.

The 3.0 heads are different. I'm not positive, but I think once I get all the fab work done that dropping a 968 engine in will be a bolt in and tune affair.

If anyone has any photos of 16v turbo engines I would greatly appreciate a link to them.

You keeping the stock cams? or you're going aftermarket/re-grind?

For now I'm going to use the stockers.

I havnt even looked up the specs yet. In the process I will probably find something about using twin cam gears so I can get them dialed in the way I want. For now though I just want to get the fab work done.

The head flows so much better than the 8v that it shouldn't matter too much how big the cams are as long as they can be timed to have wide lobe separation and minimal overlap.

so how much HP/TQ do you get from a turbo 16v:

1) 2.5L 951

2) 3.0L S2

3) 3.0L 968

?

Answer is easy: it depends on how much boost are you running and how well do you tune the engine management.

But my plan is around 400-450 rwhp on my 2.5 16v turbo. Holset HE341VE should make the torque curve more like a V8
