Default TonyG > 944V8 > Broken Pressure Plate - Broken Clutch Disk ... WOW

Being that I have nothing better to do with my time, I decided to pull the clutch from the 944V8 street/track car since I was having a little problem shifting fast when the car was hot after about 6-8 laps.

Here's what I found

Do the swaps use an LS clutch or some sort of custom conversion piece?

My swap uses a factory Vette 2-piece aluminum C5 bell housing, an aluminum C5 flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing/hydraulic slave. Only the disk is different in that it's a custom spline setup which I understand is the same setup as a late 60's dodge something or other disk that is the same diameter and spline.

Now several people are making the disk just for this application.

Hey Tony, how does the TT shaft look? By the Clutch Disc splines pic, I would have guessed it is in good shape. Once a Pressure plate goes, then the disc is soon victim no matter how built it is.

The TT splines are fine as the disk has an offset hub (not shown in the pics) which fully engages the splines.

The TT however does have a tiny bit of a bend. I haven't measure it, but you can see maybe a 1/64" wobble on the end of the shaft if you spin it by hand. It's pretty small and there's at least that much play in the bearings based on me moving it with my hand up and down.

Anyway... I guess I got my money's worth from a clutch package I installed in 2006.

The only thing reusable is the flywheel... only because it has a replaceable contact surface (but I just ordered a new flywheel... just because...)

I've had quite a few people with fried TT shafts tell me that the Renegade C5 TT adapter is not machined correctly at shaft concentricity. If your pilot bearing can rock back and forth, this is a tell-tale sign.

And it's not the HP, it's the INSTANT V8 torque on hand that will bend and break ill-designed drive-train parts. The Turbo 4 banger does not have the neck-snap that these things do. I can only imagine the acceleration of Tony's car as I have trouble keeping my 5.3 planted.

There was a huge blowup on renegade boards about this that funneled into pelican parts

The spray paint is from when it was balanced. That way you know where to bolt the pressure plate to the flywheel (cause they were balanced together).

Yes... they could have done a prettier job... (it was some balance shop we use).

Interesting.

Exactly what are you referring to with respect to the pilot bearing rocking back and forth? The outer bearing race in the crank? Or the inner race moving front to rear relative to the outer race?

The problem is exacerbated due to having very big sticky tires that hook up with out much wheel spin.... as evidenced by the last transmission with a completely shredded 2nd gear.

Random thought: wonder how it would hold up if you went with stock LS7 components?

If the shaft is not concentric, the inner PB race will oscillate of axis and in return allow even more axial movement as the bearings/races wear. The more non-concentric, the worse the scenario. One guy sent me a pic where the inner Pilot race was friction welded to the TT shaft.
