Lindsey Racing sells the updated little piece. I installed the filter housing off of an 86 onto my car and everything fit. If you want to get the updated piece, that is an option.

I ran across a mention of using a sealant/adhesive somewhere when I was reading about reinstalling that pipe but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why or where to use it because the two o-rings seemed like they would get the job done and mine had nom evidence of a sealant or adhesive when I inspected it. That picture of yours with just one groove must be what that was referring to. It may have been in the factory service manual... I'll try to find it.

I have done this job twice, and both times I installed everything dry. You shouldn't need anything to get it to seal properly.

Modded,

Was that with a pipe that only has the one o-ring as shown in my pic? Thanks for your help on this.

Same here, but both my cars had 2 o-rings.

Yes, my small pipe had two o-rings. I would change it out as it is an updated part.

Interesting, that's a new one on me. What's the VIN of your car? Wonder if it is a very early model? What is the casting number of your oil thermostat housing (its embossed in the casting)? If it is the common 951 107 151 1R then I would just order a normal pipe with 2 O-rings. The number for it is 951 107 152 03 (they are like $10 or so). If you have an earlier housing, then I can't tell you for sure the new pipe will fit it, but if you measure the diameter of the port in the housing I could confirm from a spare for you. If you really want to reuse that pipe you have, assuming it still tap-in tight, I image Loctite 574 would work ok (same as oil pump, balance shaft covers, crank girlde, etc.)

Tom, I used the small pipe (whatever it's called) from my 88 engine in an 86 housing on an S2 block. Sounds like a redneck family...but everything works!

Yes - very early car - the DME chip wasn't removable either.

Shawn - hope you have some good luck soon with this car. Let me know if I can help with anything even just temporary spares.

So...looks like it was the filter housing seals. Any theories as to why it failed 10 days after I replaced the HG? Maybe failed HG resulted in over-pressurizing the coolant, thus blowing the seal?

Seems possible, but I'd think the reservoir cap would let go first. Was there any evidence of coolant coming out of the overflow at the cap/tank?

I was in a fairly spirited run next to Josh B when I think the HG must have went. We parked at place for lunch and when we came out the coolant had definitely overflowed. I remember thinking I was not running hot. Someone said you must have over-filled but I knew I had not. Started up the car and immediately noticed the coolant smoke.

Are you pretty sure the HG was actually bad? If so, then probably the extra pressure got the seals. Did you end up re-using that little pipe with the single o-ring? What did you use to seal it?

HG was definitely bad, seal ring was split, caused by heavy gasket deterioration.

I did re-use the pipe, Loctite 574 as someone suggested
