Question Timing belt

I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I couldn't find it doing a search.
How much should a shop charge for a timing belt replacement? Should they do the balance belt as well? I'm supposed to get the quote tomorrow.
I'm considering having a local shop do it since I don't have the time and I don't know when it was last replaced. I really want to get some driving in this summer and not knowing the condition of the belts make me feel like I'm pins and needles. Also, can a shop really tell if by looking at the belt if has been replaced recently?
I figure since everything else checked out ok the timing belt is my only real risk with not knowing the replacement history. Thanks to all!
