Yep, they move... I just checked both end rings and they rotate freely... that 'O' ring must do one hell of a job to keep them from leaking...

Christian,
If your leaking oil fro your balance shafts, and more precisely, at the front, you need to replace both, the orange rubber seal, and the thin mylar (have no idea what it really is, but its thin) seal.
Take Care

Try what Bodymotion in NJ did to my engine. They just filled the receiver areas with orange silicone seal. It made a nice one piece O-ring/ groove. I didn't think I had an O-ring until after I dug all the silicone seal off the ring. Of course they did the same with the rest of the gaskets.
Just kidding DON'T do that.

You should have seen all the silicone Alan had in the bottom end of his motor when he took it all apart! Good god don't do that!
The balance shaft areas do not have much oil in them, so the O ring on the end caps are fine. They seal enough. Major leaks from the front seals happen because that area is under pressure because of the oil feeding the bushing.

Thank you guys. I also think that the oil leak is coming from the upper oil seperator o-ring. Just talked to the dealer in Vancouver - when the parts guy knows the part number better than his home phone number ...... it's a good sign that I found the bad boy.

Christian,
I have had an oil leak from the same area for some time now. I believe that oil is either coming out the end cap of the balance shaft or around the balance shaft cover or bolts. My oil pools on a shelf on the block that can be visuallized by looking down with a flashlight to the left of the oil separator under the intake manifold. I thought my upper oil separator was leaking too, but I ruled it out by drying off the block shelf, powdering it with flour and driving a bit. The oil was clearly coming from the balance shaft side, not the oil separator side. You may want to try a similar diagnostic test before tearing into it.

I guess you are right. Considering all the work involved it would be stupid not spending the extra time going after the balance shaft o-rings. Man oh man, you can only get those bolts out after ripping half of the engine out inc. turbo. Don't want to do this too often. Who designed this nightmare by the way?
