Post want to purchase a turbo

hey guys,
I'm thinking of purchasing a 944 turbo. What are some of the things I should look for in the car and what should I be looking to spend? Thanks advance!

I think just about anobody here could write a novel on the 951, so I'd say the best thing to do is a search. Maybe some more specific questions would help as there's a million things to consider when buying a 951.

Best advice I can give GET A PPI DONE!. Find a good shop near you and have them check it out.

Next thing is when (and if) you do get one, keep up with the preventative maintenance. These cars aren't your 'drive 'em and forget 'em' machines.

Prices range from $4K to $2K and you pretty much get what you pay for. I would suggest getting a higher priced car, say $10K+, with lots of receipts on major repairs and lots of new stuff.

I think Keith means $4K - 20K in the price quote and buying a good one to begin with is sage advice, financially.

if you dont have much expierence with the 951 and are trying to purchase one...there are a million things you need to look at.Set up a time with your local porsche shop to have the car looked at when you test drive it...Maybe a dealership...Boardwalk in my area charges $110.00 for car inspection and if you dont know what to look for..and dont have someone knowledgeable around to help you look over the car this is YOUR ONLY OPTION!! goodluck with your purchase these are great cars to own.

I have been researching just that....some think it's sort of insane that you 'research' a car purchase...but they just don't understand.

The 951 has it's own set of things to look out for and they really really have to be maintained or you will end up with a money pit, unless you find a 20k mile or less cherry.

The bodies live forever so it's easy to find a car that looks perfect, but in fact is hiding $10-20k in repairs...

My money is on a low mileage or higher mileage but with a 'book' of receipts and documentation. You also have to review those receipts because it's easy for the PO to simply leave out a receipt for "Jerry's Towing, underwater recovery"

A pre-purchase insp. is crucial (including leak-down test).
Spend a little more time and get one w/ limited slip (option code 220 in the trunk sticker, but have that checked in the PPI), as well as the usual maintenance, if/when you decide to add lsd it will cost a pile of $$.
Don't be in a hurry, but become knowledgable enough that you will be able to make a quick decision on a great deal when you see it. Buy a car that someone else already sorted out.
I would probably budget up to $12k for a nice non-S, research for a couple of months, then give it about 6 months or more to find a car. There's few enough on the market at any given time that you'll just have to wait for the right one to appear. If you can get a nice one cheap enough (w/ good maint. and lsd), suspension isn't too outragously expensive...

Thanks for all the advice. I should have mentioned that I'm looking at these cars because 1) i've always loved them and 2) I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive track car with good performance for the money. I'm trying now to decide if I should consider cars that have already been prepared for track use.

Ronc4,
If you have a chance to go to Parts Heaven this weekend in Hayward you should go. There will be several of us with 951's there. you can ask any of them their opinions and they will be more than glad to show you what to look for and give you some advise. You will have a chance to look at these cars first hand. I will be meeting a few people in Milpitas on Sunday morning and drive to Hayward together. You're welcome to join us if you wish.

This event takes place once a year. This would have been your chance to talk to the guys and look at the cars.
