Post Sloppy, noisy shifter......fix?

on my 1986 951 (107k miles), the shift has a lot of left/right play. When in 3rd or 4th and low speeds (i.e. stressing the engine) I also have a mild vibration noise that I can silence by jiggling the shifter.

Are there nylor bearings in the shift itself that wear over time? Is the sloppiness of the shift the "nature of the beast"?

thanks! - Mark

Do you have the stock shifter still installed or has it been changed to another shifter like momo.

There is a guy over on Pelican named FRWilk and on his web page he has a good how to for your shifter problem. I did the same thing before I found his how to. There is a lot of good stuff on his web page about early 944's.

Hope that this helps.

If you still have the stock shifter, then most likely the pin on the shift shaft is worn down. This will cause a lot of slop. Just slide the linkage off and look at the pin. You just need to replace the shift shaft. In the pic below the shaft on the left is worn near the end, this will cause sloppiness. The one on the right is new.
