jammers
Hey guys I was just over at 996 turbo and the guys over there were talking about laser and radar jammers for their cars.
Just wondering if any of you use one and possibly where to get one.

i've only heard that any of the "jammer" types that supposedly prevent radar from locking onto your car simply don't work. if you want a radar detector, buy a valentine one (www.valentineone.com). expensive, but best on the market, period.

Valentine One is the best. Except when you are going so fast you dont see the cop trying to pace you - oops. Good thing he didnt have radar or I would be in jail.

When I was going through school for my electronics engineering degree a few classmates and I toyed around with building a real radar jammer. We only had two "minor" problems...
1st : It would not fit in anything smaller that a minivan. Doh!
2nd : It fried the radar gun that we had on loan and had to buy a new one. Double Doh!
So other than the fact that it was big and burnt the radar to a crisp it worked pretty well. We had one of our instructors (an air force ECM specialist) help us with the design. Maybe that was our first mistake...

I have never heard of a retail jammer that worked. I have heard of no-name jammers being sold that did nothing. The technology us probably available, but not on a retail basis.
I have a 10 year old radar detector that works great. Laser, I don't know, those things are instant on and they target your car very closely. I would think a laser detector would be of limited use, but I'm not sure on this.

as i understand it. The jammer will cause the cop to not be able to get a reading for about five seconds
Then the jammer cycles itself off, in that five seconds you slow down, then the cop reaquires
a reading after you are within the limit.

Funny jammer story: my boss, back in the day when he and a buddy had put together a really tricked out Testarossa (back in 87-8) they installed a jammer/pacer which had the option of jamming radar or putting out a signal of 60mph (they set that speed, it's adjustable)...unfortunately they got pulled over for doing 60 in a 35 while they were going 40ish because they forgot to switch it over...he still laughs about it...I haven't had a chance to stretch the car's legs, and they've since added a V-1, in addition to the jammer hoozie...if you're looking for tricked out electronics, check out Ultrasmith...they've been putting together some of the most trick electronics in cars for ages...pricey but they do great work (I've seen it firsthand in a number of cars we've had and it is nicely done!)
