Post Help on wheel fitment-large sizes-Danno!?

I have secured this puppy and its 3 brothers, all in 10X18 ET61.
My plan would be to fit 245 in front and 275 in back.
The car is a 1988 951 Turbo Cup, the race version (I'm in Europe).
Can anyone tell me if they would fit in width, and what kind of spacers would be needed up front? I have checked the back and there is no problem, but the front is a mystery. I am asking because I could swap for 8X18 for the front quite easily, but would prefer to have the 10s in front.
Any insight welcome

I dont think a 245 will fit on a 10" wheel...

A 245 on an 8" wheel will fit fine up front, though.

I dont think you'd need any spacers...10mm at the most if anything.

What is the diameter of your front springs? If 2.5" then you will definetely not have any problems.

Danno or someone else will Im sure be able to answer definetely. I have some 17x8's at home waiting to be mounted, but I dont remember what offset they are...just that the guy said they fit his 968 perfectly.

George, those wheels will not work, so just send them to me and I'll make them fit my car! heh, heh just kidding.

Yes, they will work for you just fine. When going to wider wheels, it's best to follow Porsche's example and do what they did in going to the TurboS, increasing offset. This places most of the extra width on the inside edge where you have more room.

On the front you may need to change the springs to 2,5" coilover springs to get some extra clearance, but it might just barely clear now. This is better than using spacers to move the wheel outwards because you'll end up rubbing the fenders.

On the rear, that offset will fit because you'll have the same wheel-placement as a TurboS, but with 12,7mm more width on the inside and outside rim-edges.

Due to the 24mm larger diameter 275/40-17 tire, my tires will actually rub directly in front of the fender. This is the part where the fender curves inward at the bottom to meet the sideskirts. This is the part that has the heavy-duty rock-protection coating about 200-300mm from the very bottom. If you go with a 275 or 285/30-18 tire, you'll avoid this extra reach forward.

As for the tire sizes, you're OK there too. My street set-up has 16x10,25" wheels all around with 245/45-16 tires. My race wheels are 17x10,5/11,5" with 255/275mm tires. To get maximum grip and performance, you want to select rim-widths that are on the large end of the recommended range.

Danno, Adrial, THANKS.
There's huge value in people who have been that same road before. You just spared me a real headache.
Here's the patient:

Car looks good George! Got the racing Porsche/Ferrari paint scheme, eh? What's that yellow thing on the right?

Please post pictures of your wheels when you have them installed, should look pretty mean...

Looks like a tow hook to me Dan.

Above, you casually mentioned tire size 285/30/18. I've searched high and low for that size (as it seems perfect) but alas, seems it can't be found. If you know something I don't (about that tire size) please come clean.

Doesn't the 996-TT come with that size as standard? Here's some <a href="http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?startIndex=0&width=285%2F&ratio=30&diameter=18&search=true& pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&do=Search" target="_blank">Tire-Rack listings...</a>

I think it is a tow hook too.

George K,
What is that spoiler bolted to? I know they bolt to the factory bottom piece but it looks like you don't have that piece or the side strips on. Did you make some custom brackets or something?

Oh yeah, those are some beautiful wheels! Your car is quickly turning into an EXACT replica of my vision of a perfect 944. Almost exactly part for part, and, of course, using a turbo cup car as the base!

You'll find that size readily available in the Bridgestone S02, S03, Michelin Pilot Sport, Conti SportContact 1 and 2, Pirelli PZero Yellow and Red, etc. It's the factory size on 993 Twin Turbo, 2002 996, 1999-2000 996 GT3, etc. The 996 Turbo takes a 295/30-18.

Danno and others, thanks for the comments.
Yes that is the tow hook, the one used in the race series. The bumper does not have the square cutout for the std screw in tow hook.
The wing is a Van Zweeden replica. It is attached with 2 bolts per side that go through the frame/the lexan rear hatch. The original hatch is put aside. The fit is OK for a race car, but there is lots of work with the side trims, which will have to be glued after LOTS of fiddling. Since it is a race car, I don't really mind, as long as it is functionnal.

To complete what Georges said on the tow hook. Here is a closer picture. This is a specific part for the Turbo Cup series

Sorry guys, I had my tire sizes confused. But you knew that already didn't you.

I was thinking of the hard to find 285/35/17

Next time I'll try to THINK first before I type.

Lookin' good!!

That Lexan hatch is on my ultimate list too =)), hehe.

GeorgeK,
Do you have a website or a place with any more pics? If not I can send you a link to a place to easily set up a photo album with other Porsche 944/951 cars.

As long as we're on the subject of tire/wheel fitment, anyone ever successfully fit BBS rims measuring 9.5"x 17" in front (245/40 tires) and 11"x 17" rear (315/30 tires) ? Or maybe something narrower than a 315.

Carter,
Go to <a href="http://www.asarus.com" target="_blank">www.asarus.com</a> then on the left is "944 Turbo Cup circuit", then "recensement". It is the 7th car down the list.
Asarus is holding a great site and is trying to list as many of the racing series cars as he can.
