Post AVCR Questions

As you all know I purchased a Apexi AVC-R electronic boost controller, I'm finely going home tomorrow to maybe start the install procedure. Now if I upgrade the wastegate will I have to change anything around if I installed the Apexi for the stock wastegate? If so how is the Tial 35mm wastegate when compared to there 46mm unit?? The only additional upgrades I plan on making are a HR or SFR Stage 2 Turbo, bigger injectors, and intercooler pipes using the stock blow off valve. If I plan on using the 35mm will it handle those additional upgrades listed above? Anyone have one of these? Any thoughts on this.

Thanks
PS:Sure dont want to install this apexi twice if I end up getting a wastegate down the road.

Go ahead and install it, the only thing that'll change will be some additional vacuum plumbing for the dual-port wastegate. The size of that wastegate will then be determined by the kind of power & flow you want to get. The 35mm seems a bit small to me, while the 46mm would be what you need for 350hp+ applications.

Here's some installation and tuning tips:

For anyone interested, looks like a place called Supra Shop is selling the AVC-R for $315 <a href="http://shop.store.yahoo.com/suprashop/420-a004.html" target="_blank">http://shop.store.yahoo.com/suprashop/420-a004.html</a>

That boost controller is the older version of the avc-r. The newer version sell for more than $400+. Check out their 1200 bhp package for supra DAMN!. Here's the link:

It's a pretty nuts supra! My understanding, though, on the two different versions of the AVC-R was just the display, not functionality. Then again there's no pic -- anyone know just how bad the display on the old guy is?

Whoops, those were from before the server upgrade. Just replace the 'scripts' in the URL with 'cgi-bin':

In the A'PEXi setup text file, it mentions an SPDT switch...where might I find one (guessing Radio Shack)...but what kind? I looked online and didn't find much other than that there a lot of SPDT switches available... <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I got mine from Radio Shack but to be honest you might as well not bother because the injector duty cycle dosen't work with our cars. Unless somebody figured out how to make it work?

Question

What exactl does the AVC-R do besides just a boost controller? Or is it more of an engine management system?

Please inform me. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

That's about it really. It also has data-logging of your boost so you can review your boost-curves in each gear. It would be good to use this feature before you actually switch over to having it controll your boost. That way, you're datalogging your previous manual boost-controller or stock KLR/CV combo. Most people will be surprised to find that their 'flat' boost-curve as indicated by the dash or aftermarket gauges aren't so flat after all (especially after shifts).

Another neat feature is different boost levels in each gear. So you can set 1st & 2nd gears lower to subject your drivetrain lower stresses and reduce wheelspin.

You can also set different boost levels based upon RPM. Like give 1psi more boost from 5000-6500rpm to combat the kamikazi dive the torque curve takes on modified 951 engines...

Sounds good Danno. Would this be a stepping stone to stand alone? As I know you are a big advocate of engine management systems as opposed to MAF or bigger turbo. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
