Does Your 951 Leak?
#32
Yep. Unfortunately.
One of the previous owners must've cracked the oil pan at one point and used that aluma-weld stuff to repair it (the "weld" stuff that melts with a torch.) Not a problem, until I had the motor out this past winter for a reseal. I had a Lindsey pan baffle welded in... and my fabricator guy had a hell of a time with all the aluma-weld **** in there. He warned me, "That stuff might be porous now, keep an eye on it..."
He was right. Now it's porous. Oil weeps through it. Several attempts at sealing it with JB Weld haven't worked... I think it needs a new pan. Just not looking forward to taking the car apart enough to deal with the leaky pan so I'm just dealing with a few spots on the garage floor for now.

Resealed the entire motor earlier this year. The worse leak was from the lower balance shaft o-ring at the back, it left maybe a drop every week but it would make a mess of everything behind it. The oil pan had 126k miles of road grime on it, used two cans of brake cleaner on it before i just dropped it off at the machine shop and had them hot tank it .
I ended up going all out and replaced all of the power steering lines also, figured no better time while the rack was out. The PS lines didnt drip, but did sweat around the fittings, so it also left that nice oily film on everything close by.

Leak what ? From where ?
This little red German bastage better not leak a drop. I spent a TON of money putting new everything in there "while I was in there."
LOL
Oh yes.... "While you in there"..
Aahh, I know it oh too well, but sadly, not well enough for this car...
Cheater
Also a cheater...
What a perfect analogy ...
It's akin to being in a row boat, and you only have so many fingers, and the bubble gum ran out an hour ago !!

My 88S with 56K on it's pan is bone dry. Power steering rack is another matter - just pulled it out - leaking like a Siv. My other 88S has 99K on it and the rack is dry but the pan is weaping a little bit. Nothing terrible, just a little.

Burning Brakes
Not a drop, whats more, runs perfectly. Only one KLR reset in TWO years - poor gas. No dash cracks or seat tears eather. No shimmies or shakes, rattles or other strange noises or vibrations. Added one cup of Oil for the last two thousand miles. I've got 4k on a new clutch and all hoses, and 1k on belts, rollers and new WP. Just put the key in and GO. Stock '86 with 162k. Join the group, my tools hate me too. Hey, it's your fault [RL], you guys TOLD me what goes wrong, and I listened.
