Post So confused.... '88 S vs. 89

Ok...
I know all the goodies that came on the S.
However, which of those did the '89 get?
LSD?
And... are all the '88 S cars Silver rose with Burgandy plaid seats, and those flat dish wheels?

From what I understand the Turbo S was not limited to just the Silver Rose Edition. In 1989 they only made the Turbo S model but dropped the "S" designation as there was no other model available. Thus every 1989 has all the Turbo S options.

This website should clear up any questions you have:

About half (800) of the 1988 Turbo S cars were built with the Silver Rose paint/Burgundy plaid cloth interior color scheme. The remaining half were built with standard exterior/interior color schemes.

The 1989 Turbos were mechanically identical the the Turbo S models. They have the upgraded turbo, 928 S4 front brakes, M030, upgraded LSD/external cooler transmission, etc. They had a shorter list of standard features, however. For example, my 1989 does not have headlight washers, heated seats and has 4 way electric sport seats rather than 8 way power seats. Makes for a slightly lighter car (3,080 pounds with half tank of gas.) Works for me!

and some misinformation .

The basic summary is the 1988 Turbo S and 1989 Turbo (and the few 1990's out there) are mechanically performance wise identical. The early 1988's came in a 'standard' package with the Silver Rose color and sort of loaded standard option package with a cloth interior. The later 1988 S and those beyond could be more customized and after 1988 the 'standard' features were more abbreviated and more open to what the buyer wanted.

The main thing is if you find a Turbo S or the 1989/90 models you really can't get too picky anymore...if you're looking and one comes up in nice shape, you need to grab it as the next one may be long in the waiting.

I have found the hardest thing to duplicate if one was to build their own 'S' is the structural reinforcements....these are difficult to duplicate and require major disassembly and refinishing to copy. They may be beneficial on a race/track car, but on the street more than likely overkill.

When I look soon I am going for the best 1987 and later, and possibly even a 1986 (seems a lot of differences began in the 87MY and later so parts may be easier to source)...I am still researching.

The most common year is '86 since there were more 951's made in '86 than all the other years combined.

I was lucky to find both my '89 951's rather quickly upon deciding to buy them (or recieving the check from the insurance company in the case of #2 - the car I have now).
