Post air conditioning recharge

has anyone recharged the ac unit with new crap they use instead of the old 12. I was reading porsche recomends replacing the dryer when flushing the system and the pressure switches and then the switch can be done. so has anyone gone through this?

Just had mine recharged with R32. Evacuated the old R12, replaced low pressure switch, recharged with R32 with oil, everything cool and good to go! (still have the original dryer)

It's been around 3-4 weeks since the recharge. No leaks or problems yet.

Because the switch in the climate control did not engage the AC clutch. When I ran a jumper (a wire) across the l/p switch, the clutch engaged fine, so that switch was faulty.

Remember, in order to replace that switch, the AC system must be discharged.

well i got it done with the r134a the guys had no trouble doing just put a retrofit kit on (mostly seals ) and away i went so far just as cold as a bmw i had

Well, if the low pressure switch senses a low pressure, it doesn't engage the clutch. This means the system is low on Freon and should not be run. Until you put a set of gauges on the system to see what the real pressure is, you don't know if the low pressure switch is at fault.

Ian,

...from my other post...thought you might want to consider: After reading several forums, talking to an A/C specilist and then searching the internet and e-bay I made to stay with Freon R12 for the following reasons:

1. Once you add a "blend" (Freeze12, etc.)the system is no longer pristine R12. A/C shops have to use special equipment to work on "blended" systems. You can't go back to R12 (without a lot of cleansing and expense).
2. The blended refrigerants work, but are optimum at highway speeds and apprently suffer from less cooling capacity at lower speeds. See #3.
3. Blends and R134A both raise the compressor temp and pressure. New R134a systems are engineered to handle this increase, older systems (like ours) are not. In city diriving the increased temp and pressure can have dramatic negative results. R134a is incompatible with R12 (due primarily to the lubricant).
4. Using R12, which the Porsche was engineered for, is not really difficult. Here are the steps:
A. Can tap and hose available at Pep Boys = $5
B. I took IMACA exam online for $15, now certified to buy freon.
C. E-bay sells R12 in 14 oz cans for $10-20.

One can was enough to raise my system pressure and reactivate the compressor. The e-bay freon included lubricant and leak dye. One can did the trick.

the only reason i went with the new stuff was im going to victoria tommorow from edmonton in the 951. Not much time to really consider all the options. I'll keep ya posted on the condition of the new 134 in my system. I think if it doesnt work out i'll upgrade everything to a new system.

Blends will work with R12 but don't mix R12 with R134a unless you want to replace your compressor. R134A uses PAG oil, R12 uses mineral oil...they don't mix.
