Ran my car on the roadcourse again
Car was very strong in the morning sessions (15psi) since it was a nice cold day. Set some blistering front straight top speeds on pump gas. Pressure hose came loose, and overboosted to 30psi (!!!) for a fraction of a second before fuel cut kicked in. Massive detonation was heard, even over the loud exhaust!
After the hose was fixed, made a run at 12psi to dial in the suspension. Check out the video of my run (please right click and save to hard drive before viewing). Suspension was set to full firm, and was understeering really bad. After this run, set the boost back up to 15psi, softened up the front konis, and parked the car. Started it again after lunch, and it sounded rough. Looks like the overboost condition burnt an exhaust valve, so the day ended early. Hope to have it fixed before the next and final track day.
The Lindsey Racing "363" 944 turbo was out today too. It went down the front straight, and blew up before hitting turn 1 =(. Last I heard, the block's cracked, and when it blew metal pieces blew out the rear tires as well. I wonder what was done wrong on that car?

That's good quality video... and DAMN!!! I'd always heard those Canadian tracks were bumpy, but holy ****!!! I can't believe guys race motorcycles on something that bad! Looks bad enough in a cage with about 10~12 times the contact patch. LOL, damn frost heaves reaking havoc....
Thanks for the video....

Your 3rd gear is sick! Keep the vids rolling.. I have to live vicariously (sp) through you guys for a little while longer.

I dont get it. How do you overboost if you lose a pressure hose? Wouldn't you lose boost if the tubing for turbo broke loose? Maybe you are talking about the hose to the wastegate?

Yea, that's what I meant, the pressure hose to the wastegate. My jaw dropped when I saw 2.38kg/cm2 on the peak boost display!

No kidding! I have a friend who's a motorcycle road racer, he lost it in turn 3 during qualifying and hurt himself quite bad. Asked him what happened, he said "they repaved turn 3, and it's f%$#in' bumpier!".

Rage,
My Tec3 is set to intervene at 250kPa absolute, about 22 psi. I can set the fuel cut for a preset amount of time. Won't the SDS unit intervene based on boost pressure?
Hope the damage is light. Chris White lost an exhaust valve fom what he thought was a lean condition but i beleive he later faound that detonation was the culprit.
Hope to get through VIR on Nov 8-10 without incident. It will be nice to do a season with no failures.

I had it set to 28psi at the last drag event and forgot to change it back. The fuel cut did kick in, but I think the damage was already done. The spike to 30+psi was quick, but the damage was the buildup to 30+psi.

Head's coming off tomorrow, so I'll have pictures and more details then. I was close to doing a full season without failures... yesterday was the final event!

Thanks for the video, always good to see the 951 out on the track.
Again, I think you need to work on that suspension, the power is just overwhelming the suspension, and I can't imagine what it is like a high boost levels.
I hope the repairs go well....

I actually got my Koni yellows, springs and torsion bars installed. Was dialing it in at the time. That was run #2. Hoping to do run #3 on Saturday.

Rage,
The boost spike works out to a shade under
34 psi
It would be entertaining to know what kind of power it made before the shut down. That spike would probably be the hp record for a 2.5!

It was pretty quick! Blitz Power Meter showed a peak of 490rwhp, but that could have been from wheelspin coming out of turn 3.

The video exagerates it. You wanna see excessive squat? Check out my drag race video before I put in the springs/shocks, now THAT'S squating!
