Question just bought 86 951

I just bought an 86 951 with 120k miles.. the interior is in incredible shape and everything seems tip-top mechanically.... for now..

My first plans are to upgrade the suspension.. it's much to cushy for a sports car.. (everything on this car is bone-stock factory). Apparantly I didn't get one with the M030.. but I am looking at KONI adjustables.. DO I really need the double adjustables? or will the single be good enough for aggressive street driving, no serious competitions?

Another thing, I've been reading about the Huntley Stage I, II, III MAF kits.. and also about how this is good for a bit of RWHP gain, but the best thing is a complete change of the stock computer to and EFI system?? SDS? I am looking for more info on this, and hopefully some advice on where to take this car performance-wise.. I'm looking for somewhere between 300-350RWHP.. I don't have the need for more than that.. (nor the cash)..

I want to find the best thing to get my car to a really good performance level without worrying about blowing the heads and doing major damage.. (like running way too much boost).

Just how good is this computer EFI SDS system? what kind of prices can I expect? and what is involved in installation?

THANKS!

Rage2'sMy 951 Mod Story would be a good start to answering your questions. I'm in the middle of an SDS installation on my 951 now. The price for the system is $960.00 to $1300.00. You basically remove the DME and the KLR and the attached harnesses (I'm going to keep the KLR powered-up to keep my factory boost guage going). The biggest fabrication issue is removing the main crank pulley and installing magnets in the back side and then building a bracket to mount the hall sensor 2mm from the magnets. You can buy the intake from SFR for $175.00 or fab your own. Feel free to email me if you want. Good Luck

Since there are 15,000 944 turbo cars and a total of 1,500 944 turbo S and 89 turbo cars you would not think that finding a S for only $3K more in not likely but it can be accomplished. Lets say $9K vs $12K. But on the other hand it more likely to be twice the price say, $7K vs $14K. At any rate you want the S or 89. Bigger turbo (sound important but it by it'self is only good for 8hp)and bigger tires, wheels, brakes, abs, lsd, and stiffer suspention peices. All you do is (after you haved learned to drive the car at it' limits) is stiffen and lower it, chip it with authority chips and save the rest of your money. You will have 285hp and with good track tires you will be as fast at the track as the top ten fastest guys at any DE if you develope your driving skills. I'm not saying to save your money because I'm cheap but until you are faster than your car is you don't need to spend any more money. The exception is if you just like experimenting with this and that which is fine but for me it's who is faster at the track.

yeah. I agree with that.. (not about the buying an s or 89) but with using what i've got before i go make it more.. but i am just tired of listening to guys at work who are working on jap Z cars telling me that my car is already maxed out stock, that with the boost level where it is and all, there is no where for me to go..

i can already beat the stock turbo z's (Z31 models) but i want the extra power from a programmable computer and better fuel curve and whatever else.. (up to around 300-350RWHP)

So what is the best way to get me there? an SDS? or MAF and exhaust/intake mods?

Read this and you'll see the varied and disparate opinions on how to get there. The Best Way To 300RWHP
My opinion on the subject is pretty obvious.

VERY IMPORTANT:::
I just got my A/C recharged today.. (the guy I bought it from had replaced the compressor, dryer, hose 3 months ago). . . the sticker on the motor says to use 33.5 oz. R12. the guy running the machine got his math off and put in 36 oz. 2.5 too much! throughout the day on the way to school, the air is cold/working fine.. no leaks found btw.. then about 4pm today.. it is hot air.. nothing cold at all.. so i take it back. he says he only found 1 lb of r12 in the system (16oz) and that the rest must have leaked out.. (STATE VIOLATION ON THEM RIGHT THERE) now he recharged it and it isn't getting cold, even though it has a good vacuum.. (at 21psi).. SOMETHING CHANGED!! between now and this morning.. and I want to know if them overfilling the a/c could have caused something to stop cooling the freon.. I am so pissed!.. I just called the Porsche dealership and I'm taking it to them in the morning to get it looked over and all. I paid $150 today for nothing! I am gonna get that back, or I'm calling the free-air commission and reporting this place charging a system that leaks or that they damaged something..

Anyone think this is legit? could only 2.5 oz extra damage something? seals? evaporator? condensor?

the dealership's estimate charge is $120 + $60/lb for R12.. hopefully the R12 that's in now will stay and I won't have to buy much more.

please any help..

Are you SURE about being satisfied with only300-350rwhp? Either way, aftermarket EFI is the way to go. A lot less tuning headaches and quicker results!

that's what i am wondering.. because.. what exactly do i need for the efi? and how much about does that cost? (is it just a computer change?) or is it changing injectors? etc..

i've looked at the huntlyracing stuff. (the MAF) and other people have said that that is good, but an EFI system will blow that away.?! is that JUST an EFI system?

what kind of improve can i expect from the efi? is it "safe" for a motor with 120k on it? and stock everything?

Congrats on the new car! I know this will come off sounding like a parent but...hopefully by aggressive, you mean spirited. Agressive doesn't belong on the streets. If you want to really enjoy the car and find it's limits, focus on autocrossing and/or driver eds. This is aggressive. Check out your local PCA chapter for info.
