Question Alternator Questions

My 951 is missing the cooling hose that runs to the rear of the alt. What is the I.D of that hose??

It is 60mm. 2 3/8" should work also but that is a hard ID to find without doing a lot of calling around.

I don't think I would get the stock Porsche one because it is flimsy and has an internal steel wire coil which likes to rust and break and cut through the hose.

I would guess there are a few 944's out there without this hose to cool the altenator diodes and if it is missing or all crushed you will risk altenator failure. Buy a new one and get it in there.

I think this hose is a factor to long alternator life. Mine was missing (along with all starter motor heat shields) and I found a size to fit at Pep Boys. It was those long hoses for air intakes. They had many different sizes. I found one with the correct I.D. and cut it to length and used hose clamps. $10

Using an air intake hose is fine, as long as you get the correct material. Some of those air filter hoses are made out of a sort of paper/cardboard. This type won't last too long because a fair amount of water gets into and on the hose. This water is what also kills the stock hose which has a mild steel spring in it that rusts, breaks and cuts holes in the hose.

A working hose and heat shield does two things: extends alternator life by keeping it cooler (you can kill the alt in a weekend of hard driving without the shield) and also increases the alternator output and efficiency by lowering the operating temperature of the diodes and voltage regulator.
