Default Thinking about going Manual Rack

I've been out of the country on business for two months and returned to find my 87's power steering fluid all over the garage. Looks like there are leaks from the two hoses coming out of the reservoir. The question is, do I care about fixing the PS or changing to a manual rack? I'm leaning toward the manual...

Car is an every few days/weekend car with a few track days a year and I have no worries about the physical requirements of a manual rack. Way back when I had a 79 924, which steering feel I loved. The majority of track toys that I drive don't have PS. Also the parts prices to repair the PS on my car seem too high compared to a conversion to be worth it.

Opinions????

Also, is there a DIY for the swap? What manual rack and parts would I need? I read something about different tie rods...? Anyone have one for sale, if that's the route to go?

All input is appreciated!

Bet Lart would have one? Far as I know you do need to change the tie rod ends, outer I would think? I'm sure it's on here somewhere. I don't have one and for somereason that's the one thing on my 951 that does not leak!

Been chasing leaks on my N/A for years! Next time it happens I'll convert that one...getting fed up with that crap!

I bought a complete manual rack setup for the very same reason - PS fluid leaking everywhere - but haven't ventured into installing it, yet.

These things are going for $300+ as of late. If you can find one from a ratty old 924/44 in the junkyard and get it for $30 is your best bet.

924 is NOT the same.

I have a manual rack for sale currently, there may be someone in line to buy it first but they need to check fitment for their car before pulling the trigger.

I paid $300 for mine with the correct extended length coupler required, then another $100 for the new Moog tie rods to fit the late offset. Worth every dime. No more leaks, great feel, more room in engine compartment, a little less weight and one less belt to deal with.

I've got a manual rack as well. I got mine off eBay, the guys that installed it told me you can use older 911 tierod ends cause they are physically the same. I'll have to look at the part numbers. I love the feel but it does take more turns lock to lock than the ps setup. It will seem odd on the first good set of curves but no leaks make it worth it.

I would fix the power steering, a manual rack is really tough. These cars have a lot of weight on the front end, the power steering isn't so bad to replace. I purchased my stuff at www.allzim.com for a great price, no problems.

I thought repairing was the way to go too. Bought a reman rack from Autozone, did all the work myself and it is a pain. Ran less than 20 miles and both end seals blew and dumped oil everywhere. That was it for me. Autozone offered to replace or refund, so I took the money so there was no issue with them. Applied it to the manual rack parts purchase.

True manaual steering is NOT tough in my 160 lb frame opinion.

For late offset cars 87 & up, get a pair of Moog EV378 tie rods (about $100 online), screw your late ends on them and you are good to go. One fellow macnimed his rack to accept the late tie rods, others had extensions welded on to old tie rods and I think Lindsey Racing offers a set of late rods that fit the old rack.

Nothing hard to do, just time consuming getting all the old PS out of way. Trickiest part is installing the longer steering connector up under the PB booster and surrounded by the turbo heat shield. Easy to do, but hard to be under car and above the car at same time so a two man job makes it easy. I did it by myself, but a helper would have been faster.

There is a good write up on this if I can remember where I found it I will add link later.

This is a great write up by Rennliste....Tifosiman

If link doesn't work, search adjusting tie rod ends and scroll down

Thanks for everyone's input!

Anybody know what year/models of 911 used the same tie rods?

Amr89c4, nice to see a fellow Diamond Blue Metallic owner!
