Default 944 Turbo rattling sound on startup (video)

Hello

My 1986 944 turbo has been relatively good to me so far, but recently I have been hearing this strange rattling sound whenever I start it, seems to be coming from the engine compartment.

Here is the video
You hear it right after the engine starts up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try pushing the clutch in. If it goes away it is most likely your torque tube bearings.

Thanks for your help, I just ran outside and started it, clutch in the whole time like you said, and the rattling wasn't there, so it looks like your guess it right.

Is this an expensive repair? is it possible to DIY it?

I would say it is NOT expensive ($100-150 parts) and it can be a DIY effort (several good writeups). Now, if you switch from the stock bearing to the new and improved bearings it gets expensive for the parts but well worth the cost.

My response was based on the extensive introduction by the OP, and his explanation of tools/experience.

Alright, thanks guys.

I looked into torque tube bearing replacement, and I have to say it looks like my local place will be getting some nice business out of me.

Any estimate on the average cost of a torque tube bearing replacement by a mechanic?
