I've heard of using 930 CV, but nothing definate. But I would be interested in the GKN Motorsports. How much are they? I talked to Driveshaftshop.com
and he told me that the stock ones should be fine for 400rwhp. I had on break on me about 2 years ago with the stock n/a motor. They can build custom hi-po units, but it will be about $900-$1000 for the pair!!

Evidently, GKN Motorsport just moved and unfortunately their customer service slipped a tad. It took me almost two weeks to get their super duper racing cv joint grease.
The GKN stuff is on the expensive side but seems well worth it when you add up the longevity and what a pain in the xxx it is to "mess" with these things.
If I remember right they want something ridiculus for a single lightened race cv joint (~$200 ea.) but if you buy six or more they're more like $110 ea.
You really need to see one to appreciate. They're like jewelry compared to the stock Lobro cv joints. The races are hand finished etc.
They also make trick "tri-pod" or "tulip" joints for serious HP ...

The "Constant Velocity" joint is found on both ends of the rear axles. It allows the axle to rotate while changing angles as the suspension moves up and down. An annoying item that at times requires you to be come covered in special CV joint grease, buy an expensive twelve point tool to remove the bolts and allows you to learn new and exciting vocabulary to describe the situation when you forget to bottom out the expensive tool in the bolt and it strips the head of the bolt. All in all and fun item, actually I have the center of one sitting on my desk as a paper weight.

Danno,

Replacing the bearings is a very dirty, yet simple job.

Get a copy of Excellence #93 May 2000. Great article and pictures. Also consult Haynes proceedure, good discription on how to disassammble the bearings and cages. Be sure to clean the grime out of the cheese head bolts with a pick, to allow full contact of the socket or stripping is guaranteed.

After removal of the snap ring, two of the bearings came off the axel by hand. One required taps from a mallet. And one required my press.

After I cleaned away the old dry grease in the solvent tank, my bearings and races were fine. So I packed the reassembled bearings with Porsche OEM grease (2 tubes per 4 bearings @ 20.24 per tube) and saved some money.

Definately a job most could do.

I wonder if these CV-joints are strong enough for inboard brakes....? hmmmm.....
