That is a good point, if you don't know what the settings are, you are safer going to position 4, rather than position 5. Almost always tuners leave the ~3° timing retard alone, and only adjust the FQS fuel mapping.

And additionally, the FQS timing reduction is only in-effect above 1600rpm, IIRC.
I have autothority chips and MAF. Do you think the 3 degrees of timing will be enough or should I choose position 5 so it will be a tad bit richer along with the 3 degrees?
Thanks Josh

Usually the APE chips I've seen don't use the stock FQS settings... Rather they tend to use something like this:
Pos :: Change
0 :: 0%
1 :: +12.5%
2 :: -12.5%
3 :: +25.0%
4 :: 0%, -2.7°
5 :: +12.5%, -2.7°
6 :: -12.5%, -2.7°
7 :: +25.0%, -2.7°

So in that case I suggest going to position 4, and maybe enriching the mixture slightly with your SMT-6.

After changing the FQS, double check that the car stays in closed loop at idle and cruise conditions. APE chips have come in several forms over the years...

Josh,

A bit OT but:

Does FQS Position 1 scale fuel across the whole RPM range?

Yes, FQS fuel is scaled across the whole RPM.
FQS timing, however, is only adjusted >1600rpm.

Default excel chart from smt6 of two dyno fail sessions

I guess I made some big changes between the first and second run. My third run will be tomorrow.

Yep, just split the difference to bring the hc and co closer to their limits and the NOx down under it's limit. Are you able to drive around and confirm your are in closed loop (fluctuation up and down the 14.7 mark) at idle and various light cruise conditions?

i have a wideband and it fluctuates around 14.7 at idle and cruising speeds. Not sure if that is what you mean

Yes, that's what I meant. That's good. I'd still richen it a little -- but not so much that it fails to get back to 14.7 at a steady idle and light cruise.

I will only mess with the higher throttle positions since NOX was highest while accelerating

Default I PASSED : )

ok, I ended up failing the 3rd test, then passing the fourth.
*On the 3rd test, car was running SFR cat, -3 degrees timing, richer tune compared to run 2. I failed with HC 1.32/ 1.40, CO 7.50/ 20.00, and NOX 4.45/ 3.00. I took the car to my friends shop and we finally came to the conclusion that the cat isn't doing good despite being only a couple weeks old.
* Test 4- I ran 0 degree timing change and used the tune from run 2. I installed a new car quest 3" cat and went to the emissions and passed. My numbers we: HC 1.03/1.40, CO 5.00/ 20.00, and NOX .42/ 3.00 I am safe for another two years and I will be taking the new cat off right away so it does not ruined. It was only $75 for the cat plus welding it on.

I am kinda mad that the $200 SFR one didn't do the job, but I am ecstatic that I finally passed/
