Default Timing belt hitting cover on engine side

Hello Everyone,

Just finshed re-seal front of engine, install new turbo and m-tune and noticed the timing belt hitting the engine cover and cant firgure out what i did wrong. Any ideas before i start taking everything apart.

did you remember to put the washer on the crank behind the timing gear

Im almost positive i did its only rubbing by the cam tower, but i might have to remove it to check . It was the last thing i thought i would have an issue with.

You may have just pushed the belt too far towards the engine into the pulley.

Looks like an 86 with the manual tensioner. Did you remove or alter the tensioner mounting stud/nut? The flange on the backside of the tensioner gear is what sets the limit for the belt movement towards the engine.

Hey Chris,
It is an 86 and i did not modify or change anything, i tried to put everthing back the way it came out, but i did re-install everything a month later. I attached another pic if it helps to see where i might have gone wrong. Thanks again

Ah Ha… the rest of the story!

Looks like you have the TB tensioner roller and BB tensioner rollers switched.

The water pump pulley is flanged on the front side of the TB and the TB tensioner roller should have the flange on the back side of the TB.

Do – over. Sorry man.

Thanks 951saga,

I was just about to post what i did wrong. I was on clarks garage looking at pics of the procedure and noticed that they where switched, but you beat me to it! Could be worse, but glad its resolved.
