hey guys, as you can prob tell i am new here. anyways i just have a couple of ?s about 944s. porsches have been my fav cars since i was in 3rd grade, and over the weekend i saw a 944 that i fell in love with. it was the turbo or the s2, im guessing this bc of the body. so i am looking for a turbo or an s2 944. i just want to know what i should look for when looking, and where should i look, thanks for all the help guys. oh i currently own an 89 rx7 convertible that is in close to perfect condition, just to let you know. this is the car i saw. <img src="http://www.nopistons.com/forums/uploads/post-36-1049174691.jpg" alt=" - " />

Here is one place to start. We really need more information to get you closer than "oh somewhere between $3000 and $30000"

Average cars go between 7K and 15K. But rare Turbo S cars or concours cars can go higher. Modified monsters can hit the $30k mark. (although I don't know of anyone who would pay it...)

The S2 is an excellent car, but I'm partial to the 951.

Out of curiosity, why did you want to move to the 944 from the RX7.

Hey, I went from an 87 RX-7 to my current 86 944 Turbo... And I love it! Word of warning though, the 944 can cost a lot to maintain- more than the RX-7 anyways. But the cost is offset by the fun factor. Just so you know, the s2 is not turbocharged, as for the Turbo you have a choice between the standard turbo & 'S' turbo.

ok, thanks guys. i really dont know much about these things at the moment so any little tips will help. the reason i want to switch is that im tired of little things on my rx7 breaking and not getting anything for fixing them, like when i sell it i wont get much more for it than i would if i didnt fix the stuff. also the gas mileage isnt that great. also like i said porsches have always been my fav car, and these are the most realistic ones that i can even think about buying now. another thing, a BOV is my fav sound in the world, but if an na 944 is gonna be a whole lot more reliable then i can give that up. other than that please help me as much as possible!

really what i am looking for is the body style of the one in the pic. which cars have this style, and what is the 951???

951 == 944 turbo
that body style is consistent across both 951 and 944 S2 from '88 onwards.

ok thanks man. what are typical things that break in these cars, and what should i look for when buying?? should they have an engine rebuild, or is that typical??

Any of the FAQ's I believe will have a list of things done. Make sure that belts have been taken care of and that you can verify when from receipts and the shop that did them, or you will want to do the belts first thing. Timing belts breaking in these cars mean $$$ as they are interference engines. Valves and pistons will get to know each other very well. If you can't verify when they were done, you will want to them when you buy the car, probably rollers, front engine seals, waterpump and various odds and ends with everything apart. $1000 plus to do this.

As for things breaking, there are a myriad of things that can go wrong in 100,000 miles on a car. Clutch, power steering rack or pump, control arms being rebuilt due to ball joints, motor mounts and on and on. Again, the 944 FAQs that are out there on the web (don't have any URLs handy here at work) can point you to what might be there. Receipts for work are good, especially if done at reputable places.

Engine rebuilds...depends...why did it fail and have to be rebuilt? Things do happen like rod bearing failures in these cars, headgaskets if a turbo and modified happen, timing belt snaps, etc. If it failed because the owner was driving it without oil in the engine, who knows what else might be wrong.

Definitely as anyone here will tell you, take any prospective car to a reputable place that works on 944s frequently and have them inspect it. PPI. Pre Purchase Inspection. Probably run $120, but if they find lots of $$$ things $$$ wrong, you could save thousands or if there are only a few things wrong that they find, you could bargain down the price on the car some. Many enthusiast owners like those on this board can probably tell you 90% of anything that is wrong/off with their cars right now, but some that put in gas and go probably cannot tell you much.

thanks a lot. i talked to a guy with a 924 today and he told me exactly how to do the timing belt. hes done it twice
