Post Is there a "simple" way to tell...

...if oil is being used by the engine or the turbo??? On hard accel. to redline in 1st or 2nd, I'll get a nice puff of smoke @ 4.5k-redline. When I drive to redline very slowly (no boost), I don't see any smoke. But then again, I guess I wouldn't see any anyways as the engine really isn't being put through any high pressure. What do you all think?

Do you have any other modifications to your car? Black smoke is usually fuel. If you have AutoThority chips they run rich in the middle and if you are not hitting your full boost in first and second gear they might stay a little rich in the higher rpm range in those gears instead of being lean like they probably are in the other gears.

I'm using within "spec", about a quart every 1,400 or so. I do have Autothority Stage II chips and a LBE. I don't know if I'm a moron for not being able to tell what color the smoke is, but it seems white to me.

Chas as Jimbo pointed out white smoke is usualy coolant unless it goes away after the car is run for a little while then it could just be condensation. If it is oil it usually looks blue. The best way to tell the color of the smoke is at night with a car behind you their lights help you see the smoke better.

Well I went out tonight and found some stop lights with cars behind me, and blasted off through first and second gear. I really can't give it a color. I think it could be blueish. My coolant level hasn't gone down at all in 5000 miles (since I purchased it). Again, I am having to add a quart of oil about every 1,500 miles, so it seems to me that's definitely what I'm seeing coming out my exhaust.

THe thing is, the same smoke will appear to be black, grey or white depending upon how the sun is hitting it. If the sun is behind you shining through the smoke, it'll look black. But if it's in front or beside you bouncing the light off the smoke, it'll look lighter.

Best to measure your consumption of oil and coolant. Looks like you're loosing a lot of oil though.
