Default K27 upgrade to 35r compressor

I was on eBay looking for a turbo to replace my blown k27 and found a upgrade for the k27. They install a 35r compressor on the cold side. It's 1100 dollars. Do you guys think its worth it or should I get LR 61 turbo? Thanks

You can do it for cheaper if you piece it together using your own parts and finding some cheap cores to machine up to match the wheel. I am in the process of doing this now with my K27 that is no longer going to be a K27. I'll post up my results once I'm done. I won't be using a GT35R but a GT30Rish wheel if it is technically feasible. If not I'll probably just use a Holset wheel. $1100 is too much for the eBay turbo. If choosing just between those two I'd get the Lindsey all day. The difference is the ebay one is machined to take that larger wheel on an old K27 housing, the lindsey unit uses new Garrett parts and you have a choice of covers (TO4B and E). I'd rather have new parts for $1100 than something someone machined up.

+1 on having a new turbo insted of playing $1100 on something someones played with.

No matter what wheel you use you are still dealing with the outdated and restrictive 30 year old KKK hotside.....a Precision 55/58 billet wheel bolts to the stock mount. getvyourself a cheap Homedepot Mig/Hotsaw and some piping/V band, fabricate downpipe/ crossover, tack it, drop it off at a welding shop and have it tig'ed and at minimum cost/maximum return you have entered the 21 st century turbo world. The end.

Just to make things clear. It IS the hotside that makes a gt35, a gt35! The R part is of course ball bearing CHRA. There are many gt35 and 30 compressor side wheel options out there. I wouldn't do it.

I believe also in an earlier thread you stated that you were trying to do this with a smallish budget. I would recommend you talk to Evergreen Turbo or G-Pop, they both are experienced with 944 Turbos, and both have methods of tweaking a bit more power out of these old K26s. Pick their brains, get an estimate, then figure out if you want to spend $1000+ on a turbo.

+1. I have two turbos that Charlie made for me. One is a bigger one for the street car, which is taking a back seat to the track car. The track car has a "cheater" 26/8, and it is more responsive than the old 26/6 was. No issues running 15PSI until redline, either. And Charlie can build them VERY affordably. Had long term plans to make a 3071 or 3076 work on the street car until I happened across Charlie, almost accidentally. My experience with the new turbo has really made me feel good about the Holset impeller 27/8 for the street car. A older turbo that has hand built by a knowledgable guy goes a long, long way towards delivering performance than mass produced, newer technology turbos can.
