Post Which turbos smoke and which ones don't

I'm seing more and more posts about Garrett hybrid turbos, and turbonetics as well, blowing smoke. Are all the hybrids smoking,or the KKK smoke as well???

I was leaning towards the T04-B or T04-E for reaching my goal of 350 RWHP on 94 octane with less then 18 psi(using the DTA ecu). But I don't want to be blowing smoke doing it.So Can I acheive this goal with a KKK or an other kind of turbo.

I think they all smoke to some extent. As far as I know, they're all lubricated by engine oil?? so when you floor it, at least a bit of that is going to blow through the engine and come out the tailpipe in a blue haze.

My old car had a noticeable amount of smoke but my new one doesn't. My new car uses Mobil 1 Synthetic and my old one uses regular oil. I'm sure oils have something to do with it.

My Huntley Stage 3 turbo has been smoking since the day it was installed. I go through a liter of oil every tank of gas.

There's several issues concerning smoking turbos. I don't have the data to break it down into specific numbers and percentages, but here's the big picture.

First issue is the simplest with the kinds of seals used in the turbo. Some are simple rubber contact seals. Others are dynamic seals which use boost-pressure to squeeze them against their mating surfaces. As you can surmize, dynamic seals are best because they can work well even as they're wearing down (clearance is automatically adjusted).

Second is the used/rebuilt turbo. For the longest time, the only aftermarket upgrade turbos for our cars were KKK/Garrett hybrids. These used most of the stock KKK turbo such as the turbine and center cartridge. Vendors would take a used K26/6 or K26/8 turbo and bolt on a Garrett compressor housing and wheel; sometimes they wouldn't even rebuilt it. Do a search for "garrett hybrid" in the various forums and see what you find.

These issues have been largely averted now with the introduction of BRAND NEW turbos for 951s from Turbonetics. These are new, not rebuilt units, so the seals are good from the start. They have new bearings, turbine housings and wheels, not rebuilt/refurbished units scavenged from cores.

I got a brand new Garrett ball bearing turbo from Speedforce Racing and it is tight as a drum.

It has 3,000 miles on it and absolutely no smoke.

My K26/8 Cheater from Huntley never smoked in the 3000 miles I ran it.

I hope the K27/8 is the same.

The turbo I got from Scott Gomes has yet to smoke. Ran it all summer at the track with no problems.

My K27/6DR that I got from Powerhouse doesn't smoke. It has about 10,000 miles on it.

My powerhaus k27#7(DR) david raines turbo never smoked either does my k29#8 from them, the issues on smoking with the turbos also can come from people buying chips that are too rich for the airflow their turbo provides, example being i put custom mapped k29 dme and k29 klr powerhaus/autothority chips in my car. With the k29 I got smoking on partial throttle till full boost, once on full boost airflow of the k29 matched the dme chips mapping, so i took that chip out and put a k27 dme turbo mapped chip in and it would not smoke at any rpm, so i added fuel mid range and high on my arc2 and backed it off once it took care of all lean issues and i didnt smoke at partial throttle.

Uuuuh, I think this thread is about turbos blowing oil smoke, not running too rich and blowing smoke. If your turbo's seals were bad adjusting the mixture isn't going to help.

Well, here's the difference between oil smoke and fuel smoke:

Fuel smoke will be black, indicating a rich condition or a low A/F ratio. You're going to see a just a slight haze of black smoke when you floor it if you're getting enough fuel....very slight though, sometimes not noticable. This doesn't necessarily apply for diesels, but I'm sure it's safe to say that nobody has misplaced their contact lenses and pumped diesel fuel into their 951.

Oil smoke will be a light blue/almost white haze. A bit of smoke when you floor it is OK but allot probably means your seals are on the way out. By allot I mean you loose sight of whatever was behind you. If there's no smoke, that's OK too because your turbo seals are probably just really tight. That turbo needs it's lube spinning at 80,000 rpm or whatever they do so it's not surprising they blow stuff through them.

The only other smoke I know of (not really smoke) is condensation being heated into vapour and then blown out the tail pipe when you first start up on a cool morning.

Thats right,I am asking about oil smoke from the turbo.
I'm understanding from this post, that the Huntley turbos (or most rebuilt turbos) are more prone to smoke. If this wa the case, why are the rebuilt kkk's from Powerhaus not smoking.

Last thing I was curious to know,is the TEC T04b or E a smoker as well.

Thanks guys

My Huntley Stg2 TO4E-50 trim Garrett/KKK hybrid doesn't smoke, and never has. If you want 350rwhp at less than 18psi boost, you'd probably want their Stg3 TO4E-56 trim hybrid, like Rage2's. I have no idea why Rage got a bum turbo that smoked, but like I said, mines been fine.

I wouldn't call it a bum turbo. Other than the smoking problem, I'm really happy with it. Makes all the power I need @ 2.5L. I'll be rebuilding the turbo this winter to cure the smoking problem anyways.
