Post WHAT DOES A TANK OF GAS WEIGH?

Configuring my Race-Technology AP-22 meter.

I am adding 3115lb dry weight, plus driver weight, and wanted to take into consideration the weight of a tank of gas.

What does a full tank of gas weigh?

Thanks

Tony, no, no, no. Gasoline usually is under 6 pounds per gallon, depending on mix. Some Gasoline is down about 5.6 lbs per gallon. Use 6 pounds/gal for estimates if you have no clue exactly what sort of mix you are getting.

You must be thinking of #2 diesel which can get over 7 lbs per gallon.

I just did this to determine how much I wanted to adjust the ride height. For an 86 951, the tank is 80 Ltr. which is about 21 gallons. I was using a weight of 5.75 Lb's per gallon for a total weight of about 121 pounds.

I have a brand new 54 gallon drum of VP Performance Unleaded 100. It weighs 400lbs (indicated on the side of the drum).

Maybe the emptpy drum is factored into the weight?

I also have a brand new 5 gallon drum of the same VP Performance Unleaded 100. The can says 40lbs.

I have a bunch of the empty 5 gallon drums, and they can't weigh more than 3-4 lbs.

Tony, you might want to check those scales or your distributor. Iceshark is spot on: Gasoline usually weighs in at 5.8ppg to about 6.4ppg. Ethanol is about 6.4-6.5ppg, Xylene is about 6.2ppg. Fresh water 8.3ppg and salt water 8.6ppg(avg Gulf)

Tony, weigh your drum when it's empty, you might see 17 to 23#.

I didn't weigh it. This is what it says on the drum. Look at the label. <img src="http://www.tonygarcia.org/fuel/1.jpg" alt=" - " />

Maybe VP doesn't know the weight of their fuel?

Tony, in aviation we use ~6.25 lbs per gallon of 100 LOWLEAD gas. There is no way 100 UNLeaded weights more per gallon than leaded gas.

Maybe the drum label is mixed up Imperial / US gallons.

Even at 23lbs for the drum (your figure) you get 400lbs - 23lbs = 377lbs net

377lbs/54gallons = 6.981lbs per gallon.

It's not imperial gallons. It's US gallons for sure.

Look at the 5 gallon drum rating. It says 40lbs.

I've got several of the 5 gallon empty drums (we use it for motorcycles) and it can't weigh more 5lbs MAX.

Even at 5lbs for the empty can (if that which I highly doubt), that still leaves 35lbs for 5 gallons which equals 7lbs per gallon.

The refinery reps (Shell. Petro-Canada) tell us 5.9 to 6.1 lbs/USgallon for regular unleaded. I expect that premium is about the same. We just measured some leaded gasoline that has been weathering in the ground for 20 years (gets heavier with weathering) and it only weighed 6.4 lb/USgal.

Tony, the label is wrong. It should be 54gall - 204litres - 320lbs

320lbs/54gall = 5.9

weigh a full drum and see if they are ripping you off.

I know for a fact that there is 54 gallons in the drum, and the label does say 204 liters.

Your assumption of 320lbs is just that an assumption based on what you believe the weight is per gallon.

I have no way, nor any intention if I did have the means to weigh, a drum of fuel.

It's extremely heavy.

I just cannot see how a fuel supplier with the reputation such as VP Racing, could possibly not know the weight of their fuel. It just doesn't make sense. If it was a misprint, it's been a misprint for years and years becuase it's always said 400lbs on the Performance Unleaded 100 54 gallon drums.

Maybe someone should write them a letter and ask them to correct their labeling? Do you think that labeling on hazardous & flammable materials is regulated in the first place?
