Cut slots in Front(badge) panel
Will cutting a couple of extra holes in the front panel make any noticeable difference on their own with the standard intercooler?
Anyone done it like that??
Thanks,
Gary

Gary,
Quite a few years back aftermarket fibreglass nose panels were made for the 951 with two vents in it to supply coolair to the front of the intercooler. It was up to the end user to finish the fibreglass, paint and provide some ducting (which is very simple) to the intercooler. In back to back tests at the 1.9 mile (old circuit) Laguna Seca track, the nose panel would reduce lap times by a full second. The holes in the nose are particularly helpful at low speeds (below 100 kilometers), as air flow increases at speed. At low speeds heat soak occurs in these cars' intercoolers. I've driven around town on a 40F ambient day, with intercooler temps reaching 45C. Once on the highway, they drop. But, the vents assist there as well.
There are a number of newer panels available on the market. One way is to take your own nose piece (they remove in minutes) to a reputable fabricator. Outline the size and location of the vents you want. It is a little tricky 'cause there is some support pieces on the back of the panel. After the vents are cut, they need to be properly finished, ducted and screened (to protect the intercooler), as well as painted.
I had to take my panel to three fabricator shop before I found one competent. The finished product looks very good.
At any rate they do help. The more H/P, the more important they become.
Hope this is some value, best of luck.

Vented Nose Panel
The previous owner was planning on either putting on a cone filter or drilling out the factory airbox and using a high-flow panel filter. I will probably do the latter at some point in time.
If you'd like, I can e-mail him and ask where he got it.

Thanks JGriff,
That's one very clean car you,ve got there. Nice motor too.
The nose is kinda like what I want to do but maybe with two slots a bit like the speedforce version.

I bought it from a guy in the town next to mine, and he was willing to take my 1973 914 2.0 as a partial trade!! Talk about killing two birds with one stone!!
Now I just can't wait until the weather gets better!! It's driving me nuts not to drive it!!

Yeah, they are awesome. I love them.
They sure do a great job of keeping you planted. They will definitely come in handy when autocrossing!!

Your nose peice looks like the fiberglass one that Performance Products has. You can tell by the cutouts. I think that is the one I will go after if I cannot get a used header panel for mine. (Not to mention $175 to vent it + cost of panel will be about the same $$ as the fiber one.)
Very nice car.
