Yes that smell is not wanted in streetable car.
If a tank is made to suit the drivers side tire well one possible advantage could also be oil line routing. Should be possible to make it nice and snug and not interfere with the stock look in an engine bay like most racecar setups with oil lines coming on top into the battery tray.

Well still just an idea, not sure I will ever go down the dry sump route.
