Post engine swap almost complete

for those who don't know, i've gone thru quite the mechanical saga w/ my 86 944 turbo lately... we've got a completely newly-built motor now, 2.8L stroker w/ some work incl. head, plus a bigger turbo, injectors, some electronics, etc.... i've been working on this car almost non-stop since Jan 1, and REALLY wanna get her done....

picutre(s) is worth a thousand words(pics credit: Memphis):

can you tell i'm thrilled???

motor's in

between sat/sun we've gotten everything in and done, it's just a matter of loose ends... well, litereally - loose/shot tie-rod ends. those, a new tensioner for the power-steering pump (and the alternator), power-steering pump drive belt, oil-pressure sender, and some front suspension bushings are all that stand in the way of being able to drive her.

i'm hoping to do some more work (body/paint/interior) soon but right now, i'm just soooooo itching to get the car back on the road

Makes me want to go to my garage and put my engine back together right away!

How did you build the stroker, 3 liter crank and shorter rods?

Congrats, that is going one beast of a ride....

Hopefully you can get it on a dyno before too long so we can see what kind of power that thing is putting down (yes I'm slightly dyno obsessed)

Anyway, enjoy it... nothing better than the car running in top form....

Looks great! Also curious to see what kind of power you are putting down. Keep us posted. What kind of turbo, head, cam, etc did you go with. Also is it necessary to remove the whole motor in doing the 2.8 conversion or can it be done while doing the rod bearing? Thanks. And Congratulations.

turbo = kokeln street (lindsey)
head = lindsey stage2
cam = stock

as far as doing it while doing rod-bearings, i would think so but it would probably be a PITA. we had the old short-block out anyway cuz of the damage, so i don't know for sure. the actual engine pull / swap wasn't bad, in fact, only took a little while, if you have access to a lift and engine crane (hence why I'm doing it with a local shop and not in my friend's garage as everything else was done).

i'm hoping to dyno it no later than May 1, possibly sooner but I want to break it in / do some rudimentary tuning on the street with the digital maf first. I'm expecting roughly 400-425hp at street (12-15psi) and with race gas and maybe 18psi, i don't think 450+ will be too unobtainable. I've got a stock (catless) exhaust which is a limiting factor, and a stock cam, so I expect to see less top-end power than i'd like, but it IS a street car, and will stay thus for a few years more, so i wanted more low-end grunt and will upgrade those as needed (when i get bored with this, not likely to happen any time soon lol).

oh, and MAD PROPS to josh @ autocrafting here in rochester ny, he really knows practically EVERYTHING and is one of the best wrenches i've had the honor to work alongside (and also a very conceptual guy with amazing ideas)

Congrats dmoffit,,looks great! Dave told me a little of your story the other day when I talked to him. You will really like that turbo and head combo and trust me, with proper fuel, good A/F ratio, it will give you g's all the way to redline. You breaking it in with dino oil and about 6psi for 1500 miles, then 10psi 1000 miles then BOOST? Curious becuase I know how David Floyd was breaking his in, then Perry951, just curiuos. Good luck with this one.

Get Dave some pics so I won't be the only street car in Album section with the GT3 racers...LOL!

lol yeah, i saw that on their site, your car is SOOOOO clean! *jealous*

ya i plan to break it in a bit, dave gave me some suggestions... it's got a new clutch/etc. and i am under the impression that i have to break that in gently too (rpm wise) so i'm just going to take a few short road-trips to give it a shake down, break everything in, etc.

pics will be soon, gotta get some paint work done, she's a bit on the "ugly duckling" side of things right now
