How many of you run Mobil 1 Synthetic? If so how often do you change your oil? I was on the boxster forum and they use the same Mobil 1 synthetic oil as I do but change there oil every 15,000 miles as per Porsche recomendations!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

What! Every 15,000 miles! No, I change my oil every 3,000 miles. I know that is pushing it for my car, and I am using Valvoline Full Synthetic oil. But i here Mobil 1 Synthetic oil is really good, so maybe you dont have to change it for 5,000 miles Tops. But hey, what do i really know. I just know cleaner oil lubricates better.

i'd change it every 5 min, 3 would be better, simply because while synthetic oil doesn't burn / coke as easily like dino oil it's still gonna get dirty, gonna get broken down to some extent... and oil's cheap, easy to change, and so are filters... so if you spend the extra time/$ to do it more frequently, you certainly can't HURT anything, why take a chance?

I have a friend that works at an oil analysis lab. So what I do is based on many, many conversations with him and folks over the past 7 years.
I run Mobil 1 15w-50 (I'm in south Texas). I use the Mahle oil filter. I have 175,000 on the car. I start watching the oil closely at around 4K for dirt, excessive gasoline smell. It usually gets nasty between 4.7K and 5.2K. Remember that's my car. How worn you piston rings are makes a BIG difference.

Just switched from dino 20w-50, after breaking in the rebuilt engine, and am running Mobil 1 15w-50...I'll go 4-5000 kms between changes...I agree with dmofitt...Even synthetic is inexpensive compared to the rebuild...
Besides, I run it the way it was made to be driven...Firmly, very firmly.

I have to agree - oil changes are cheap insurance. Even with high quality synthetics oil gets dirty. I'm buying a Boxster S, it's got 6,200 miles on it and running Mobil 1. I'll change it every 5K.

With dino oil one had to change it more often as it breaks down fairly quickly due to the different molecule sizes. One of the byproducts was sludge, although todays oils are a fair bit better with additional additives from the refinery. Synthetic oil does not break down as easily to create these byproducts.
Due to it's molecular make-up, synthetic oil has far superior lubricating properties that reduces friction which reduces in turn reduces heat. It has the ability to suspend dirt particles that will be carried to the filter. If the dirt is not filtered it goes back into the engine causing damage/wear. The key is proper filtration to remove the dirt and impurities. Most off the shelf filters trap particles larger than 25 micros; quality filters trap those over 10 micros. Spend the bucks on a good filter.
With an engine in good shape the oil can last well over 10, 000 miles if the oil filter is changed more frequently e.g every 3,000 miles or less, and is not contaminated with water or other fluids. When the filter is change you would usually top it up with fresh oil. If you do an oil analysis through a lab you will find that the oil is still good, but dirty.
As a side note, you should have it analysed anyway. It will give you an indication of any future problems with the motor similar to a blood test. The amount of metals and quantities found in the oil will indicate where the potential problem areas are.
Remember, the key is to have clean oil in the car. Change the oil filter frequently to keep it clean. When you do an oil change, do an oil flush as well. This will clean out all the crap in the engine allowing the oil to flow better. I have used synthetic oils and lubricants in all my cars since 1986 with nothing but great results. It's amazing how much better the car runs and not to mention the better gas mileage and cooler running!
