Post wheel fitting

O.K. I am a vw tech at a vw/porsche dealer and I am just about ready to buy a 951. I have been looking at a few around 6-7k with about 150k mi. on them. The ques. I have is this. I was told by one of the porsche tech's at work that I want an 87 or later because the older models will not take a set of 911 wheels properly. I can get an outstanding price on a set of late model take offs. He said some thing about backspacing not being the same. Is this the case? what other considerations should I keep in mind in regards to year? thanks for any help.

The 86 951 has an offset of 23.3mm, all other 951 models have an offset of 52.3mm. You can put late model wheels on the 86 951 if you add spacers and longer studs. It's a common upgrade (see my P-Car Online Profile for an example).
