Post Intercooler spayer tip using existing headlight wahsers

This an idea I have to add an inter cooler sprayer. I am going to re-route the headlight washer lines so they can spray water mixed with alchohol on to the intercooler. I am thinking of using winshield washer nozles or the headlight nozles. I will be using the stock windshield washer reservior. The best thing about it is that the pump is there already and the switch to activate is on your steering wheel already. I don't know if any real hp gains could be achieved or maybe less detonation and more ignition advance.

What do you guys think?

Good idea! I think you want more water-pressure and a finer mist. The water should be completely vaporized by the time it hits the intercooler. This creates the coolest air-stream possible as the water will have absorbed 540Kcal/mole and will have cooled the air the highest amount possible (this is concept behind artificial snow). Otherwise, solid droplets falling on the intercooler itself can only cool based upon the temperature differences between the water and intercooler. So 70-degree water falling on the 160-degree intercooler will only yield a heat-transfer of 1Kcal/cc/degree of water before it runs off the back. However, this is still a two-step heat-transfer process. Once between water-to-intercooler and once again between intercooler-to-intake charge.

Even better will be to inject the water directly into the intake charge coming out of the intercooler. For the same amount of water squirted, you can achieve an even higher temperature drop of the intake charge. A great system that does this is the Aquamist ERL system. Here's some links of interest:

I saw somebody done this couple of years ago in the way you describe it.Don't waste your time doing it.I would follow Danno's suggestion

On that auquamist water injectionm are there real hp gains to be achieved without advancing timing? I just wanted a cheap way to do a intercooler sprayer. That aquamist is out of my price range.

Also, what do you think about using CO2 or nitrous to spray onto the intercooler? This should make the intercooler turn in to a block of ice! I heard it makes a pressure drop but shouldn't the boost controller add more boost automaticly and close the wastegate more and compansate for the boost drop?

I actually began this process for the very same reason. I even went so far as to re-route the mister infront of the intercooler and added a simple misting head from a local hardware store. Only problem is, at this moment, it only works with the headlights on and when I push the windshield washer lever forward.

I had planned on setting up a much more useful system, but never got around to it.

Check out this link for a VERY COOL (no pun intended) way to do the whole job. (It just takes some work)

With alchol, I dont think You would need that high off a pressure. I watched a guy with a 3rd gen use a windex bottle to spray his intercooler after a run. I dont know if it was a mental thing or not but his times dropped.....

There's discussion among the Supra folks, who often run nitrous, to position the purge valve near the intercooler to do this. This would probably only be effective for drag racing, since they only purge the nitrous system once before using it.

Mine probably looks a bit like Doc's, only I used cheap *** stuff I found at Walmart in the garden section. its supposed to be used to put out on your patio, to cool the area.

It was about $20 buck for more materials than I used. Used a short piece of the spray tubing, with 2 nozzles. Zip tied the tubing to the bumper in front of the intercooler. Took about an hour to set up. Buttdyno says, worth $20. Nor sure how much it would be worth if it started getting pricy. It isnt very high pressure, but it soaks the intercooler pretty well and has a pretty fine mist. Now I need a ChargeAir Temp gauge.

I use a spray bar on the intercooler and it seems to work fine. I have a 3 GA. reservoir in the trunk, that is pumped through a windshield pump w/filter. It uses distilled water. When the MoTeC senses temps. over 39C, it activates the pump. Prior to the installation I saw intake temps. of 60C, now 40C. Direct the spray to the passenger side of the intercoolr, where the Delta T is the greatest. An inexpensive plastic nozzle seems to work fine.

I think the best solution for me is to cool the intercooler with CO2 or nitrous. I made a special metal U-tubing that goes around the core of the intercooler. I made it out of brake line tubing and it even came with the fittings for 4 AN. I drilled alot of holes on one side spaced out about 1/2" each. I will post a picture so you can see. ALL I need now is to buy a solenoid and nitrous bottle and lines.

Water944t,
I'm interested in how you set up your sprayer.
I would like to make something like what you have.
Can you get into more details what equipment you used and materials.
Bascially a how-to procedure.

Thanks for your help.

I think the ideal is to read manifold pressure and turn it on at say 17 psi. I am working on a system right now that is using the washer pump, pressure switch and about 30% alcohol. Alcohol is only a benefit for freezing, and you don't want to put more than about 40%, because alcohol itself is a fuel and is prone to preignition. Also - be very careful that your tank stays full, because if you raise boost levels high enough to become water-dependant and run out - you are in trouble.

The above is a link to 1 of 6 articles on this topic. pretty interesting stuff. I have not read it in a year, but from what I recall this system works off rises in temperature of possibly the intercooler. I think the reason intake manifold pressure was not used is because you would use all the water real fast. Its set to work only as needed based on temps>

That's the same article I too read about a year ago. See my previous post:

It sounds to me to be the best way to go about it. Definately worth reading.
