How funny....who could have predicted that we would go from talking about a 951 blowing up in a popular car magazine to human combustion....where else could this thread possibly lead?......

Lessee.. the original topic was from a article about the "One Lap of America" 'race' that has replaced the old "Cannonball Baker Memorial Sea-to-Shining-Sea" event... (nope, it wasn't just a movie). The 944 blew up at one of the track events that are a part of the whole thing.
Human combustion? Fat burning like a candle? Heck, I know some peole that'd probably light up a whole small town for a night...
Jim, "Metrical nosedrops... for fatheads...."

Not really....for general car info. I rate C&D behind Road&Track, but ahead of Motor Trend.

I agree, I think Motor Trend is garbage. It's the AOL of the Car magazine world. I like Road & Track and Car and Driver for American magazines. I like Excellence for Porsche specific content. I think the europeans have some decent mags, like Auto, or Top Gear. Speaking of Top Gear, have you guys seen Tiff Needel? That guy is awesome! Is there a video clip of him driving a 951? That would be incredible...

I stopped subscribing to any mainstream auto (non-racing) magazines several years ago. I still pick them up off the newstand from time to time.
Road and Track has seriously gone downhill in the last several years. The best part of the magazine is Peter Egan, and for some reason they keep reducing his pages in the magazine. Personally, I could care less about how 8 different $35,000 pseudo sports luxury cruisers compare.

One thing that sets C&D apart from all of the other mags out there is the writting. You can always tell that you are reading a C&D article. They are witty and informative all at the same time. Road and Trach has come a long way. I didn't used to like them at all but since they changed their format they are a lot better. Motor Trend blows. Autoweek is a really informative mag. You get more inside information in it then in the other publications.

I second that. I really like Autoweek. Funny, Infromative, Lots of cars for sale, and its weekly..hence the name Autoweek
And the best part of autoweek is when they rip on the Pontiac Aztek. If they can relate it to something theyre talking about..they do. Funny as hell!

Autoweak's articles come out about 3 days before the monthlies on the same cars. They must be really slow when it comes to editing. They also don't do any worthwhile testing, at least not consistently.

I like Autoweeks classifieds, as well as some of the columns that they address. And I definately like the coverage of Formula 1.
My big beef with Road & Track now is the column that is written every month by a writer in Wisconsin who loves to justify how great his old Buick or Oldsmobile is...WHO CARES!?!? Start writing about cars, not your stupid clunker...
Anyway, does any one have an archive of all the 944 Turbo articles that were written. I want to scan them with an OCR program that converts them to pdf's. Unless, some else has done this (HOPEFULLY!!), and saves me the trouble.

I totally disagree. Peter Egan is the best part of the magazine. I was going to buy R&T at Border's yesterday, but decided not to after they cut his column to just a little over a full page.

Steve,
I totally agree, Egan is the best thing about R&T. T--besides his Buick, he has quite an impressive collection of project cars in various stages--I think he has an E-type almost completed. Autoweek--heven't read that since Satch Carlson went to jail. Automobile used to be pretty good, but I haven't read that in years. Oh, well who needs to read about cars other than Porsches anyways??

I enjoyed his column when he discussed rebuilding Jaguars, or race cars, but it seems like his last year is defending the purchase of a plain jane car. He obviously feels persecuted by those who know him enough where it is on his mind constantly. Those of us who do not know him are now subject to his defensive responses.
BTW, I am glad there are those who enjoy his current ramblings. It seemed that he was under pressure to come up with something every month and this is all he could come up with.
I would love to see him return to a topic that is more sports car oriented though......
Just my .02

I have to admit, several years ago I read R&T and Autoweek religiously. These days I read R&T much less frequently, so I am not as up on Egan's current subject matter.
That said, my current primary automotive magazine interests are GRM, Autosport, Excellence, 911 & Porsche World, and Racecar Engineering.
