Default Engine dead :(

Car ran fine yesterday and today on the highway after finishing the water pump work and front reseal, new rollers, new belts work this weekend. Unfortunately as I'm nearing home I hear a puff and then a sound that makes me think a hose popped loose. I drive it slowly the next few blocks and get in the garage and as I go to turn it off the engine dies. I think I heard a rattle but Ive been hearing one from under the car every now and then lately so not sure if this was new, though it probably was a worst case from what I've been reading.

The engine spins freely now when I tried to crank. I think it may have spun freely as it died but not sure exactly what I heard now.

I'm figuring that the new belt failed or something along those lines and valves hit pistons. I'm going to inspect the belt tonight and see if that is damaged.

If the valves bent, what's a general price range on the work? I've r&r the head before so I can save on that cost. Would it be better just to get a complete new cylinder head? One problem is that I have to rent a car while this is being done so turn around is a potential deciding issue.

Your description leads me to think it could be a popped boost hose (or a tear in one of the couplers.)

Peak thru the cam TDC hole to see if the belt is still intact. If a boost coupler pops off, the engine really doesn't want to run and will die (happened to me a few times...)

A boost hose popping off would have been a nice revelation but sadly very slim. I have t-bolts and silicon couplers and my inspection so far is depressing.

Got the top belt cover off. Balance belt shredded but enough still intact to engage the shafts and turn them. Timing belt slipped off tension sprocket, will have to remove the bottom cover and see if any teeth missing but what i can see they are still intact. Balance shaft sprockets front plate are damaged from the incident.

I'll post pictures in a moment. I'm thinking I should start pulling the head tomorow night and see how many valves kissed the pistons.

Gack! Any idea what caused that? Loose belt tensioner perhaps, and then when teh timing belt slipped, it took the balance shaft belt out?

The good news is that if you did the belts yourself, pulling the head isn't beyond your abilities, just work slow and you'll do fine. Any local machine shop should be able to take care of teh head work and it won't be that expensive, relatively speaking.

By the way, I have a brand new head gasket kit sitting on the bench unopened, if you need it. You can have it for my cost, $132.00 shipped.

I've pulled the head off before when the gasket failed several years ago. I did that in my apt. parking lot but now I have a garage I can use so much more convenient. I had some valve springs that were bad and valve guides as well. I'll keep the gasket kit in mind. I've got some research to do on where I took the head before and such.

The tensioner seemed fine, I'll mess around more over the next few days and see if I can figure out the cause. Would like to avoid a repeat.

Ok, the previous work I had done on the head was:

Cylinder head resurface, valve job, new springs

$488.16

That was in 2005

Well $280 for labor on a DOHC 16 Valve 2 liter in Carson City NV, plus parts ie 16 valves. Times 2 in my case, I had a roller failure and there was still shrapnel, I did not see when I redid the head and T-Belt. Yjis time it only bent all 8 intake valves.
My point being triple check to make sure you get all the crap out of there!

Any opinions on the Lindsey Racing Stage I cylinder head as far as value? If I have to replace a large number of valves maybe it's a better deal?

I guess it's a good thing I have the lindsey metal gasket for the cam tower, I can reuse that.

I hope the rollers are still good. They are all new.
