Talking Cam belt went today!

Hey team,

My cam belt went today, some valves are bent... any ideas on mods while the boys are down there?

Bummer . . .

However, that is the tuner's favorite mantra . . . "upgrades while in there". . . You should see some response on that.

On the pleasant side of things, I have insurance! I noticed some forged rods on ebay, I will be running higher boost (up to 18psi), do we need forged rods or are the stock ok? I am actually not that upset about it, I have the cam cover off getting powercoated and polished. I think I will get the widefire head gasket, anyone heard of decent valves or are the stock ok? I dont want to go overboard, as the insurance company wont go for it...

wow, an insurance company that covers repairs? Nice.

I would think that widefire is more than adequate, the forged rods were standard only on the '86, and the stock valves are sodium filled and muy expensive, I doubt you could get much better for any reasonable amount of money.

WOW forged rods as stock on my 86? really? And sodium filled valves as stock also? I am shocked! So our bottom ends are pretty much bullet proof anyways? Yeah insurance for mechanical repairs, covers everything but tuning stuff like plugs etc... It cost $600NZD (about 5c USD) for 12 months, just a wee joke there about the currency conversion. Actually its about 57 cents US to 1NZD. I have gone to town on claims! So other than the cool gaskets, there is not much else to do?

Andrew,
Sorry to read about your bad luck, though good news with insurance. As you plan to do further mods you may want to do a search on here about thinner stemmed valves. In parts they may even be cheaper. Can't remember for what level of tune they were recommended. Not even sure if they would be a good idea, but while you have the opportunity you may as well spend 15 mins researching.

Hope the head rebuild goes well.

Regards

Glen

Yup, all the '86 951s had the desirable forged rods. I heard that some early '87 had them as well, but no one knows for sure when they ran out and started putting in the cast/sintered ones. The main benefit in going to aftermarket rods is to save some weight because the stock rods are heavy.

i'd simply get new valves for those that were damaged (approx 75-90USD) and possibly replace all of the seals/guides. perhaps have someone examine the condition of the springs too. beyond that, and a simple 3-angle cut (or 5?) valve-job, I'd leave it alone, unless you have significant upgrades or plans for them (aka agressive cam, huge turbo, stroker, whatever). I got a stage2 head w/ p&p etc while I had mine out, but that's to reflect the rest of the stuff done to the engine.

How much do you pay for insurance to cover mecanical failure? I've never heard of this before. What's the name of the insurer?

Good luck on the rebuild. Maybe now is the time to powdercoat/paint engine parts?
