Post My turbo is whining!

I just took it for a run and i noticed a whining sound coming form the front of the car (All other problems have been fixed). I opened the hood and it's the turbo! How much longer do you guys think it'll last? I know it's a danger to drive it that way. I have to get a new turbo soon. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Take off the J-pipe and wiggle the turbo's axle by hand and see how much radial and axial play you have. On our 185k-mile test car, we think the turbo's on its last legs since there's about 0.5mm of play. Yours might be even worse to the point where the blades may be contacting the sides? Or maybe it's just the bearings.

if it's just the bearings what do I do? How much life is left? if it's touching the sides, then what do I do? thanks again.

I had an RX-7 which did the whine thing once. Shortly thereafter it spit part of the impeller down the exhasut pipe. Stopped at the cat.

Since there was nothing in the way of the oil line to the bearing it dumped large quantities of oil into the hot exhaust and then inot the hot cat. Ever see one of those WWII navy movies with the ship laying a smoke screen?
