Post Yokohama AVS Sport -vs- BFG GForce KDW?

I'm looking for a set of new tires for the 86' 951 and I was all ready to go to tirerack.com and order me a set of the trusty old Yoko AVS Intermediate tires, They were listed on the website for $70 or so and they were a closeout special. well, today the rear 245/45/16 are no longer there! crap!

So the next 2 best tires look like the Yoko AVS Sport and the BFG Gforce KDW.

The Yok's got a 8.8 for dry traction on tirerack and the BFG got a 9.1, plus the BFG has a better treadwear rating and are about $10 cheaper than the Yok's

I think I'm getting the BFG's, but I wanted to hear any pro's and con's from you folks that may have owned them?

I think the AVS Sport places higher overall than the intermediates

the BFG's are generally regarded as one of the absolute best tires if max performance is intended (read: high grip in dry, ok mileage, ok noise). Bear in mind that this is a HEAVY tire so it will be harsh. But this is for the KD's not the KDW's which compromise some dry traction for better wet traction.

They are about on the same performance level as the acclaimed S03's (another very heavy tire)

I had the AVS sports on my GTI and can't say enough good about them. They were spectacular in the rain (I'm talkin quasi monsoon Florida rain here) wore excellently (after 6k miles I could barely tell they were worn) and grip was good (not spectacular but definately better than average). I got some really good 60 foot times drag racing on them too (2.23 for a FWD car on 17's is quite good). They were easy to live with even in NYC streets BTW

Wheaw I just got mine in the mail yesterday they were not however $70 they were $57 . But then again there was $10 per tire shipping sooo.

Ohh well now U just have to make sure I do a couple burnouts to get rid of that last little bit of tread on the old tires.
That is after I put my motor in.

So now I know who scooped up the last of them!
I have those tires on all my other cars and love them.

I have run AVS Sports on my Turbo for about 10-15k miles. Not really sure any more.

Anyway they have been great. Quite and good grip at AX and track. I am about due for some replacements and I have not decided what to get. Thinking abot Kumho Escta 712's or their new MX.
Only reason I am not looking at AVS Sports again is cost. When I got them I used them for SPORTY Steet driving, AX and Track duty. They never let me down until I tried race tires on my track car. Once you go R compound is VERY hard to go back.
Now that I have dedicated track car I don't need that extra grip and would rather save that money for track tires.

Never driven on BFG's.

I have the KDWs (got them last year when they offered a free g-tech with purchase).

I have found them to be very good dry and wet. They seem to be warring well too. I had RE71s before. One note, on 9in rims (club sport), the 245/45s seem narrow. I have read that this is a trail of BGF tires. the 225s on the 7in fronts seem ok.

BTW, I now have two g-techs, one never used in the box, willing to sell if someone is interested.

I have the AVS Sports now, but I don't think that I'll buy them again. They wear way to fast for being so expensive. I'll probably go back to the Toyos, they seem to handle better and not wear as fast. Both are good wet tires.

I too changed from RE71, but went with AVS sports. These have lasted much longer and are far grippier. As for the thinking that the BFG is small looking on the 9" Club sport.... My AVS sports also look small in the rear, but perfect in front.

It's because that wheel is best suited for a 255 or 265 tire but there isn't a 16" tire of that width with a short enough aspect ratio to use on these cars...

I plan on going with a 265/45 (kuhmo autox tires).. An inch taller than 245/45...but oh well.

Will it clear the fenders OK with the stock I think 60mm offset?

As for the KDW's, they lasted pretty well...they would've lasted way longer if I had a more aggressive (more camber) alignment. One half of the tire is chewed up with chunks missing and whatnot...and the other side is pretty much perfect...hehe.

Cool, you're finally getting them huh? You'll drop your lap times like crazy with those things, a good 2-3 seconds on a 60 second autocross course. As for the fit...I forget the rear offset of the factory 17" wheels [cup, 993, etc] but I've seen many people running a 275/40 17 and they don't experience any rubbing with stock ride height [best comparison I can think up right now since those are also ~1" taller than stock]. I think you got new rear shocks recently too so you should be good to go!

Oh no.... You won't have them for this Sundays AutoX, right?

Well, I'm glad I decided to get a set of competitions myself, but I wanted something that would last a little longer, so yoko 032R seemed appropriate. Mounted and balanced today, ready to tear into them Sun.

Nah I dont even have wheels to put em on yet.
Gonna go with rear club sports (forged D90's) on the back of the car and rear D90's on the front of the car. 245/45 front and 265/45 rear...should be vicious.

Thanks G96.
