The battery needs to charge on a charger for a couple of hours, OR start the car and let the alternator charge it. If the alt can't charge it, it's either a toasted battery or a bad alt. Your local autozone or advance autoparts will test the battery and throw it on their charger for you if you want. They can also test the alt, if you remove it.

Agreed with the majority - sounds like a dead battery.

A good test - though not sure if this will apply to the 944 - is to flip the headlights on and THEN hit the starter. If the headlights don't dim, and you still hear the click-click-click, it's generally a starter problem. If the headlights dim significantly, it's a battery problem.

Why I'm not sure if it applies to the 944: some cars automatically cut the headlights when you flip the key to the start position. I don't know if the 944 does this.
