I just got my 87 951and I am trying to do my own first oil change (on any car).

I found the oil filter next to the power steering tank. I tried to grab it and twist it before doing the oil change because it didnt look like I would be able to get it off. I cant even grab it let alone twist it. Is there a special way to remove this, or a special tool i will need? It seems impossible there are even hoses going right by it making it impossible to grasp.

This works well when removing filters in tight places. Just loop the strap around the filter, twist it tight and put a socket wrench into the end of the tube and rotate, Comes right off.

Take a trip to Autozone, they'll have all sorts of tools to help remove oil filters. I use one that fits over the top of the filter and you can put a 3/8" ratchet into it. Once I break the filter loose it will easily thread out by hand. When I reinstall I don't use any tools, just make sure to clean up the mounting surface for the o-ring, wipe some oil on the new o ring, and tightening it down pretty snug by hand, you'll have no problems. Next time it should come off a little easier.

If you have the new filter, bring it with you to see which one fits the best. Try to get the smallest possible one that fits, it will make it easier (if that word even exists working on these cars) to get the filter off.

be sure to put your headlights up when you go to take it out. with the headlight bracket out the way it frees up enough space to get out easily.

and put some rags down on the left side of the housing, that will help with some of the mess when you go to pull the filter out.

I went to Autozone and got this, it works well.

Now on to my next issue... I cant open the yellow oil cap in the engine bay, its on WAY too tight and ideas?

Also when I drain the oil I will be using this welding glue to glue up a very small crack in my oil pan that my speed bump gave me. Any recommendations when doing that?

take a rag and put it over the cap, then use both hands to try and twist it off. Failing that, keep the rag, then put your biggest pair of vice grips on there and twist. The caps sometimes get varnished in place.

i had to use a pair of large channel lock pliers to get my filler cap off. When you put the cap on put a little oil around to top to help keep it from sticking next time. Also, do not forget to use fresh oil on the o-ring on the oil filter when you put the filter back on the car...

something that helps keep the mess down and simplifies things is if you drive a screwdriver into the old filter; it lets air in to drain the filter out and gives you something to grab onto.

ok got the cap off.... NOW th drain plug bolt is stuck... any advice on gettig that off? for now it is soaking in wd-40. Is left loose or right?

The drain plug bolt holds back all the oil it can handle. A little WD isn't going to help.

What will help is joining a local car group (preferably one with a german car owner, big bonus if a 944/951).

Its cool you came here with questions, but for an oil change, asking how to remove the filter, the drain plug, and the fill cap makes me think you should slow down.

Without sounding like too much of a wet blanket, you need to assess your tool inventory, mechanical abilities, and financial situation. A great deal of all 3 is best, but won't assure a happy ending.
