My first clue that that something was up was after a quick 1-2 shift there was a bang loud enough to make my cd player skip, I slowed up thinking something broke, but the car still drove fine. I continued on my drive and after about another 20 or so miles of driving I went to shift from 2-3 and I could hear the torque tube spinning but the car was not accelerating. I got it off the road but am kinda stumped of where to start. The clutch is still engaging because the whining stops if I push the clutch in, but the car won't move, the shifter still moves through the gear pattern(although its sloppy, but was this way before) so the gears still feel like they are there. Possibly something with the torque tube, or input shaft on tranny?? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I won't get a chance to get the car up on jack stands until this weekend sometime.
I had a similar thing happen to me a couple of years back. A loud bang and no go. After I got it in the air and started poking around I found out it was the clutch fork shaft retaining bolt had loosened up and the shaft had backed out. Give that a look before you start tearing things apart.

Good tips suggested so far, also you said that the shifter was sloppy. Does it bounce? If so check your transmission mounts and see if the transmission is pulling away from the torque tube.

Thanks Lart... Well, we got the car up on the lift and found out the issue, or issues should I say. The housing on the front of the transmission is cracked, so I am thinking that was the loud bang I heard. Second issue, the driveshaft coming from the torque tube is spinning freely in the transmission coupler, I'm hoping the coupler is the only damaged part and not the actually hardened driveshaft. If the splines on the driveshaft are rounded off I'm guessing I will need a new torque tube?? If I don't need a new TT, can I just buy that housing that is cracked or is that supposed to be one with the torque tube??

Still not sure why the housing cracked in the first place.

weird, the housing comes with the TT, I have many and if you were nearby I would let it go for free, maybe another member has a spare $ 50.00 at the most, check for the bolts on the coupler maybe one came out loose and caused the damage.

All the bolts on the coupler seem to be intact, Im going to start the tear down tomorrow. I'm just really hoping the driveshaft splines are not smoothed off.

Keep us posted, I usually pull a tranny in 30 minutes or less so it should be an easy job.

George, I wish, as soon as I run out of 951's I'll have to move either to 968's or 986's. I'll be hard because the crowd that spends the money is the 951 crowd.

The TT can be shipped by UPS, they are right at the limit of height.
