Question Random weird start

Hi guys, I know theres a tons of post like this one on many forums. I tried to read more than I can but no solved solutions.

Sometimes when I start the car (cold, warm or hot), the car start perfectly or cranks. Never the same, sometimes it crank 2 times, sometimes 5 times, sometimes slowly 3 times..

Is someone had the same problem as me?? I need an solved solution with a problem like mine.

This was happening on my old 1986 NON-Turbo and on my current 951 1988. I know that A KIT of Porsche 944 have this problem.. there must be a solution no..?

I'd suspect the s/r sensors. Every time intermitant problems happen it seems to be them. I had one of the bolts strip out and it would randomly not start. Those are the only things I've had trouble with regarding random non starts.

Yep I would say the speed and ref sensors, look for tach bounce! If the tach moves it will start if no tach bounce it won't!
I have replaced both sensors and it still does it! No real pattern happens at random, I shine a flash light on the sensors barely touch the wires and it fires right up!
Those freaking sensors are the best argument for a Standalone with a crank mounted trigger wheel in my opinion!
But hey it's part of the charm!

Did you buy your max chips new from LR? If so get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and get Dave Lindsey to tune VIA email. Unless you have done that already of course. Just a thought. I will be doing that with my car shortly.... that is if winter ever ends.

good luck,

Jason

Tis the nature of the Beast. Most starting problems solved by a wiggle of the Speed and Reference Wire Connector Plugs.

Cheers,

Are you saying sometimes the car cranks slowly, sometimes at normal speed?

If so, clean the the major grounds and the connections on the starter and battery.

Ditto to Jerome - what's "slowly"... the cranking, or the car running?

If it's a slow crank, then do what Jerome said - check all your battery and starter electrical connections.

If it runs slowly (3-400rpm and then creeps UP to idle) - my car did the same thing (you bumped up my old thread, I responded there too.) Hard warm starts where I had to crank the hell out of it to start, it would sometimes "spring" to life, and other times, it would start slowly - as in, run at 3-400rpm and work its way up to idle speed of 850. That turned out to be a sticky AFM. You can pull yours out and take a look inside. The flapper door should move cleanly and freely all the way through its stroke. If it binds or sticks in ANY way, then you probably should think about replacing it as that's probably the problem.

I'd also try what Grandpa #3 said and blown 944 referenced - jiggle the reference sensor wires. In fact do this first before looking @ the AFM as this is much more common. Easy way to tell if it's a reference sensor issue: you should see the tach bounce when you crank it. If the tach isn't moving at all, then jiggle the reference sensor wires and try again. If the tach IS bouncing a little, then the sensors are doing their job and you need to look elsewhere.

Ok thank you guys for your answers.

For the battery cables, no dirt there.

Major ground.. can be interesting to take a look there. I will need to find it.

When the weather will get warmer outside, I will take a look the the R/S sensor cable. If the cable is clean, i'll take a look with the tach (tachometer?? this is what we are talking about??) Because I dont know what this piece looks like (R/S) so i cant figure out what is the use of the Tach. Thanks to explina me.

I'm pretty sure the problem is from the Reference crank or speed sensor

Thanks guys.

Yes "tach" = "tachometer"

Here's some information on the sensors with a few photos: http://clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/ign-02.htm

Hmm interesting. It makes me wonder how many bad AFM's are out there? I have the random non start after hot and wiggle wire and it start thing also. This after new sensor reference wires were rtplaced!

I'd be curious if anyone that had this problem found that it disappeared after a MAF install?
