I resealed the rack on my 87 & it's not leaked after two years. I do all the wrenching on a friends 86. His rack sprung a leak big time at the Barber DE. I ordered the Autozone rack Friday for him.

Autozone was happy to order another rack (warranty replacement) for me last night. It was shocked that they didn't even require a core charge or full payment. They guy just said "we'll have it here Thursday, bring your broken rack in and we'll swap it".

The tech guy at ATSCO was cool, also. I'm not thrilled about pulling the rack tonite, but I'm giving the ATSCO rack one more chance.

If you didn't read my earlier post, my rebuilt rack would only have power steering to the left. It didn't give any indications that it was failing, and it isn't leaking. It just quit helping on right turns. This was after around 1500 miles in 14 months. Actually, it was working fine until this thread....karma!

Autozone called yesterday afternoon and said my new rack came it. I carried the defective rack in, swapped it in the box, then the counter guys says "there must be a price adjustment, we owe you $4.80 Sweet.

I installed the new rack and drove 50 miles. Like new. I'll post up if this one has any issues down the road.

Note: ATSCO doesn't include tie rods or bellows. Their website confirms this, but some have said their racks came with them. Neither of mine did.

Yes, Autozone dropped their price to $189.

What's the latest on the Autozone racks? How are they holding up? I have the original rack on my 89 with a little over 100k on it. It's not leaking, but it's off the car for some other work. Thinking while we're in there to reseal it or replace it.

I'm on my third steering rack. The first one made it to 120k miles and the second one lasted 90k miles.

JSS, are your far from the border?
From Montreal it is one hour.
You order online, Autozone call you when they receive the rack, you bring your old rack, 189$ and done!
As mentioned previously, if you have any problem, you can bring it back to them.
I did that twice and at the same time I pick up a bunch of parts at Freeport forwarding on my way home.

No one has any specifics to the longevity of the Autozone rack?

They are ugly, but work. I have had mine for several yeas with no issues.

FYI, the first one I got was bad when installed, however the second one is great. Well worth the money in my book!

Still working great. Still ugly, but in its defense, the number of card carrying members of the "944 Turbo Steering Rack Appreciation Society" are not all that great.

Not too surprised. In my radiator search, I'm finding less options for many parts at "normal" sources.
