Nah, if it were one of the sunroof gears, you would still get the whirr of the sunroof motor but no action. When I push the button to lower the roof, I get pure, absolute, dead silence. I would consider myself lucky if it were that simple.

Check the switch in the roof, very crappy design that easily gets mis-aligned.
If you operate the roof carefully, you can live without (so jump the contacts for testing).
Add to toolbox:
- flashlight, small.
- spanner 13 mm & 10 mm
- 2 piece of wood (for those WITH spare tire), one 2 inch thick to drive the flat wheel on and ine 1/4 inch playwood to go under the jack.
