I wish I had the ability to do all the work myself. It would have been fun.

the difference between someone who knows what he's doing and one who doesn't is usually just time.

...unless your 'inability' relates to leaving bolts loose, stuffing metal shavings in your engine, etc. If you're not harmful to yourself and others you'd be fine

For all who's tracking the process. My car was back together and Matthew, my mechanic was doing some road tuning and the head gasket blew when he went on boost. He said he thinks the HG was an original organic HG from 1985 and its just rotted from age and sitting a lot since the car only has 39,000 miles on it.

I'm waiting for him to get back to me on an estimate for replacing the HG. Any one care to guess on the number of hours it will take?

Replacing the HG will be the easy part. Applying boost to the new one will be more difficult. Did you happen to log the "tuning run?"

My mechanic did log the run with my wideband and EBC. It blew at 10.8 psi of boost. I have a feeling the car had a weak head gasket because I had coolant on the garage floor and the cars temp would spike when at a traffic light.

also he said under boost the A/F mix was in the 11 range. I'm still unclear to what is lean and what is rich with the whole A/F gauge, but I will learn it. I will get more specifics when I go to his shop tomorrow.

Meanwhile, we just got dumped with 5 cm of snow here today!

I'd take a blown HG over the snow

You live in Canada, Alberta no less. You should be used to that by now.

Trust me, it blows huge. I'd like to punch the settlers in the mouth that founded a city here, too damn lazy to get their caravans to the ocean on the other side of the Rockies.

DAMN! Sorry to hear that. Maybe now you can do a couple of the preventative measures from stage II? Perhaps just a wide-fire HG and stronger head studs. I hope Matt gets it back to you soon, it's been really nice out here lately. I know your car is in good hands.

We are going with a widefire HG, but as for stronger head studs, I've read conflicting reports. Some swear by racewear and some prefer genuine Porsche. Thoughts??
