You definitely have to roll/cut/grind the inner lip,(actually only the front have), but, yes it will work since this is what I did on my previous 944S with later offset.

IMO, a 315 on a 9" wheels is a bit silly... You certainly wouldn't run that tire/wheel combo for performance reasons. That size tire belongs on an 11.5" wheel. The proper tire for a 9" wheel is 245-255.
If you want to run a 275, get yourself a 10" wheel.

Ian is right, I actually have 285/40/18's on 10" rims now, and, it looks good, (so I thought) until I saw the same rims (identical style and size) with 265's, and they look so much better (more of a performance look) I am looking to change to 265/30/18's for my 10" rims. (of course, this is for the rear).

Yeah I wouldn't use any thing more than at 255/40-17 tire on a 9" rim either. The performance gains are minimal if any. A 275/40-17 tire would be best on a 10-11" rim for maximum performance.
"Anyone know if I can run 275's on a 9x17 993 cup rear wheel with stock 951 bodywork?"
Yup you sure can but will require some fender grinding at 10 & 2 o'clock positions (left & right). Also some grinding may be required directly ahead of the axle on the fender as well (9 & 3 o'clock) due to the fender curving inwards there. The 1" taller diameter of the 275/40-17" tire reaches forward and rubs there.
No grinding is needed if you get wheels with increased offset like the TurboS @ 60mm. This places most of the extra width on the inside where there's more room.
With 17x11.5" 60mm offset wheels, you can also use a 315-35/17" with some more grinding at the rear of the fender (10 & 2 o'clock on both sides now). Some careful prying outwards of the fender with a 2x4 on the area directly ahead of the axle will help the tire clear that annoying part.

that's an 11.5" wheel
EDIT: ya so that would be me acting the fool not remembering badcoupe's post. Sorrry about that Steve.

I think Steve's talking about the spinning donut that grows in diameter when the drag cars do their burn-outs. With the severely-pinched sidewalls with a 315/35-17" tire on 9" rim, you might every well be able to do that ... heh, heh

bump.
what size should I run on 18x10 rear (996 C4S 18" hollow-spoke turbo twists)? 275x35? 285x35? 285x30? also, for fronts, I assume 18x8 should be a 235x40 or so? i'm very close to working out a deal on a set of 18s (just sold my c2 cups) and want to order tires to get here when the wheels do...
