Just curious since I replaced my about 2 years and 40k miles ago. Is it time?

Have you done the belts recently?
It's usually done at the same time as the belts as a lot of the work is already done...

Other than that..I'd say its a little early, but do it now to be on the safe side because the car is pushed hard so often.

I do mine every other belt-change or so. On my car, the original pump was changed around 100k-miles. And I just changed it again right around 198k-miles.

My pump had 80k miles on it when the pump was replaced. I was having the head done at the time and my mechanic changed the pump as a precaution even though it was fine (and without asking me). That's the last time I'll ever take my car to a mechanic BTW.

OK... (While I greatly appreciate the responses) Here's what I'm hearing; no body seems to know for sure.

I pretty much figured, "Sure, replacing the water pump more frequently is better" which is just plain common sense.

AND while I know from experience (since I've done both), it's much easier to do on an engine stand with the motor out of the car than in, I'm working on a $LIM budget for my current rebuild and I'm trying to figure out if I can live with the current pump until the next belt change. After all 150 odd dollars is STILL $150!

I suppose I ought I to just call a dealer.

Doc...you got some good feedback. You're not going to get a "replace it at 53426 miles response." Perhaps you should reread what folks wrote. Danno got 100K out of his, JonM's was still ok at 80K, Adrial says he'd think seriously about it at now at 40K not knowing you're on a tight budget. If you installed the updated (new) pump 40K ago, I wouldn't do anything figuring I'd do the belts again in another 30 - 40K and catch it then (for sure).

By the way, the PO of my car did replaced the H2o pump at 45K, but I don't know if it went bad or it was just preventative. Based on the personality and (very) deep pockets of the PO, I suspect the later.

Good luck,
Mike

Gentlemen, my apologies if I came across as being rude. I suppose this is not as common a question as I initially thought, i.e. Ask on this site if there's a difference in wheel offset between 86 and 87+ 951 and you get many definite answers. I was sort of expecting the same.
