I believe it can be removed as I've seen the gas cap sold without the lock.

I believe there are wafers inside the plug that can be reconfigured by a competent locksmith with correct parts to fit the ignition key.

Did you rekey to the existing ignition key? I was wondering if you had to replace any wafers or simply removed a few.

I got a new ignition key and I rekeyed all the rest .glove box, hatch doors glove box. car now has new key and only 1 key to do them all. and yes new tumblers to match key . not just removing. thats not the correct way to do it.

Did the gas cap plug have only a few wafers as compared to an ignition that has a wafer for every cut corresponding to the actual key? I was under the impression that door/ignition were fully keyed, but the gas/glove box lock were less complex consisting of only minimal wafers in the tumbler.
