86 951 offset info
So I browsed through a search to try to find this info... all this talk of ET #'s and different wheel sizes...blah blah blah.. really have me confused. The wheel thread kinda confused me more.
What I am asking is the 23.3 and 10.6mm offsets proper for my 951? I am looking at a set of wheels and I think this is the proper offset for my early car but am not sure.
Help?

http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq13.html
It seems that this is the proper offset for my 86 951...but in the wheel thread it said it was not... confused....

Maybe not. It depends on the offset of the wheels you buy. I have an 18X8.5-40ET that fit my front close enough that I may throw a 5-7MM spacer under it just for insurance against liner rubbing.
In other words, if you get a 1" wider wheel/tire, and the offset is 30-40MM, it may center itself really close to where you want it. If you get a 60MM offset, you'll need spacers. I used big washers on 3 of the wheel studs, adding them until they fit "just right", then used the thickness of the washer stack to determine the spacers required.
Bottom line: searching on here will reveal that what worked for one person, didn't work so well for another, even using all of the published data. Throw in the fact that one side of the car MAY have the hub closer to the outside lip then the other, and you've got you something.

The wheels in question are staggered 16x7's and 8's... it an aftermarket Fuch. I may have the spend it illness on the car, but Im not going to drop such a huge price for OEM fuchs...that will probably need reconditioning.

I learned quite a bit searching this site (along with others) for my '86 and still had questions, mostly because of the 65mm offset on the 10 inch rear wheels I've picked up.
23.3mm is what we have and you simply do the math from there to determine if any spacers are needed for a specific set of wheels. The washer trick is definitely a good idea and was recommended in a thread I had about fitting my late model Carrera lightweights onto my '86.
What is the offset on the aftermarket Fuch's?

AScholtes - the aftermarket repro FUCHS will not fit your 86 951 even if the offset is correct. The aftermarket FUCHS are modeled after a 911 wheels and will not clear your break calipers due to a subtle difference in the backside of the black center section.
About a year ago, I was looking at the same wheels you are and it is confusing...luckily before I purchased them I discovered this.
If you are looking for a set of real 951 7's and 8's google PauerTuning and send Vic an E-mail (also he is a really honest and reliable guy)...the last time I spoke to him he had two set...one he was offering for $900 and the other one he wanted $1,100.
Hope the prices don't sticker shock you, but they are worth that much due to the 911 guys utilizing the 8' to run on their fronts. Additionally, while the aftermarkets are of good quality and are fairly cheap....they will be only worth 1/2 of what you paid for them the minute you buy them....where as a "Real" set of FUCHS....you should easily be able to get back at any time in the future should you choose to upgrade to a 17" or 18" wheel.
Here is a great link with everything you want to know about 944 wheels...also you can give the guys at Wheelehancement.Com a call as they seem to know almost everything there is to know about Porsche wheels.

Good Luck on your search.....and when you get the FUCHS be sure to post some photos.
Here is mine before and after it was "FUCHED"

ELSUSS - you can do exactly that......run the 8"s (951 Part # Fuchs) in the front and 9"s (AKA 930 Fuchs) in the rear...I was tempted to do this until I saw how much the "real" 9" Fuchs go for......if you think $1,000 for a set of 951's Fuchs is a lot....search the 911 Forums here and at pelican and that will seem cheap...the 911 guys have deep pockets and are FUCH Fanatics....also the 9" have a little too much lip in my opinion for the 951.
Additionally, replica Fuch 9"s also work on the 951 (I think automotion sells them for about $300 a wheel).
Hope this helps you guys out......and there is nothing like getting "FUCHED".

In summary, Fuchs for an '86 Turbo:
1) Stock: 951 part numbered fuchs in 7" for front and 8" for rear
2) Improved: 951 part numbered fuchs 8" in front and 911/930 part numbered 9" fuch in the rear. (this same combo is (was?) adored by older 911 drovers (self included) which no doubt drove up prices.)
3) Base wheel on the 86 944T was the 16" phone dial in 7" front and 8" rear widths. 23mm et.
Alternatively, with a set of something like these: http://www.trakplus.com/ can make the newer "late" offset wheels work well.

I've decided to wait.... after looking at the aftermarket Fuch's and then having to buy proper centercaps and nice lugnuts... well it was close to a pair of the real deals... either way, im not really sure yet. I may just wait and upgrade to MY02's when its time to buy tires again... they are what I really want anyway...and I have brand new tires on the car right now (3 months old and maybe 150 miles before I pulled it off the road for the winter and wp/belts/wyit servicing...)
